I've never seen anything like it... My icon labels are still on the desktop, but there are no icon images. The quick launch tray is also missing icons as are all folders that I browse - though they are only missing some of the images. When this first happened, there were no images at all in browsed folders. Now there are 40% correct icons and the rest are generic un-associated icons. Also, the quick launch tray has little squares that pop up when I mouse over where the icons used to be - like placeholders.

What led up to this was a hard drive (semi) crash - ... "could not read from boot drive" though my bios acknowleged that the drive existed. I reinstalled WIN2K and everything came back but the icons.

Also the more common problem with Windows Installer coming up trying to install random programs started and explorer dumps out when I try to search or anything a little challenging for W2K...

The Icons exist, but there are no images... Can someone point me to the source for these so I can perhaps find the zapped file? I thought it was shell32.dll, but that is still there - maybe it is bad?

    TIA Scapegoat...

Noodling around solved the problem... I did work over the registry with Regcleaner - a great program if you have the need. All I did was remove junk that I know was uninstalled or long gone...

I installed Norton System Works, and did not do any of the suggested fixes except the SysTrayHack. That is most likely to have fixed the problem. I had been working in Admin user profile where the problem did not exist. THe next time I logged onto the bad profile the problem was fixed - although my icons were huge - I guess at one point I thought maybe the size settings had been messed up and enlarged them to see if that jiggled the handle.

    THANKS ALL!!!
