When in IE - when you save a favorite, the IE icon will be in front of the favorite in the favorites widow.
However, sometimes the page you are saving will have a specific icon unique to that page, to represent it.
Does anyone know how these icons are added?
I would like to add one to my homepage so that when people save it the special icon is there instad of the IE one.

I use Frontpage, if that helps.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Of course.......you'll have to remove the spaces next to the carets and it should go in the header.

Let me know if it works... ;)

    Deuce,
I've been experimenting with this and now realize I need to get the icon down to 16 x 16 pixels..... Seems to need to be an .ico .
You pointed me in the right direction. Thank you.
I'll let you know when I get it.

Ah yes........... .ico.......forgot about that. Are you in need of an icon editor?

Yes, I guess I will be needing an icon editor.
Didn't realize there was such a thing...;)
Checking the web now, but will take your suggestions if you have any to offer. Thanks.

Try this link. This one is pretty good......at least the version of if I used a few years ago. It looks like it's not complete freeware anymore...but there is a 30 day trial. If you think you'll want to use this more than 30 days and don't want to keep installing it, I have an older version that doesn't expire.......I can email it if you want.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I have taken some of the pictures I was going to use down to the 16 x 16 size and they look bad when they get that small. It takes a special picture to look good at that size. I may hang this up until/if I find a decent picture to use as the icon. I was going to use a tennis ball or smiley face. They look like a blob when made small.

May have to rethink if this is going to look good enough to do. I certainly understand the concept now though to do it, and the code that is needed in html. I'll let you know if I get anywhere with this.....

Thanks for putting me on the right track.

Oh you wanted a picture? For this you need a simple graphic.........it's possible with a tennis ball or smilie though.........but you may need to make them from scratch. There are plently of people here that would be more than happy to help out. Random is a good place to look. Actually as I look to my left as I post this I notice the vB smilies and they look about 16x16................one of these :) should work nicely. For a tennis ball, just make a circle about 16x16 and draw in some white lines.

and here as a 16x16 .ico with a transparent background..............the only problem is that you can't post .ico here, so I saved it as a .gif and hopefully it will maintain it's transparent background (it should). Just save to your hard drive and open up in the icon editor and "save as" as ".ico"................and make sure the background is still transparent (it should have dots in the middle of the pixel)....if it isn't paste the transparency tiles over the background). Tag on your page and see how it looks. :)

BTW this new version of iconcool I just found is nicer than the older version I had.............play around with it, it can come in handy. ;)

    Deuce,

I took the gif and converted it to an icon using iconcool.
It now works when I save the URL as a favorite.

This looks like a 'cool' tool to use. I've only worked with the picture tool bar in frontpage and I'd like to spend some time later today getting familar with iconcool, as I have some ideas to experiment with.

Thank you again for your help.

Its pretty simple to add an icon to your page.

First thing, you need an icon. By reading through the posts here, I guess by now you already have one. If not, make an small BitMap file of 16x16 size and save it in 16 colours. After that, just change the extension of that file from .bmp to .ico. You have your icon ready :)

Next, place the icon file on your web-site server. Place it in the same folder from where your web-page gets loaded. For example, if people who type www.yoursite.com and index.htm page gets loaded into their browser, then in the same folder as index.htm on your server, also keep this .ico file. You don't need to change any code in the web-page.

Hope this works and is what you want.
