My IE browser has been hijacked by something titled "accounts.nationalcity' which places "about:blank" in the address field, opens new tabs at a rapid rate and crashes my browser. Any assistance anyone can give me in fixing this would be greatly appreciated. The following is my HijackThis log:

    Hi, jog267 :)

    Welcome to TSG.

Please move Hijackthis to a permanent folder. You can use the following utility to do so.

    [IMG]Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
    • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

    Ugrading Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
[IMG]Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Thanks for your reply. I followed your post up to the point you advise me to run Panda ActiveScan. As it requires IE to run, I cannot complete a Panda ActiveScan. I tried; IE crashes almost immediately. The AVG file is too long to post here. These are the files it quarantined:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gtdownls_95.ocx -> Adware.Gdown : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).
    HKU\S-1-5-21-1645522239-1202660629-1957994488-1004\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{CE7C3CF0-4B15-11D1-ABED-709549C10000} -> Adware.Generic : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).

    Hi, jog267 :)

    Jotti File Submission:
    • Please go to Jotti's malware scan
    • Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan"box on the top of the page:
      • C:\WINDOWS\system32\devldr32.exe
    • Click on the submit button
    • Please post the results in your next reply.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

    O16 - DPF: {6BC013D0-77D9-11D5-AB95-0050DA664D35} (Yodlee Assistant) - https://myaccounts.nationalcity.com/.../Yodelizer.cab

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

    Close Hijackthis.

Click here to download WinPFind (Beta).
    • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
    • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
    • Dont do anything with it yet!

    Reboot into Safe Mode

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

    • Double click WinPFind.exe
    • Click "Start Scan"
    • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
    • Once the Scan is Complete, restart the computer back in Normal Mode.
    • Go to the WinPFind folder
    • Locate WinPFind.txt
    • Place those results in the next reply!

    Hi, jog267 :)

It it worked for you, it also worked for me. I don't believe an ActiveX is able to do what you have indicated on your first post, except if your settings are wrongly set.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
    1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
    2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
    3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
    4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
    5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
    6. CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
    7. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
    8. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
    9. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.
