This is a new one for me. My mom brought her laptop over, complaining that she can't get online. I am able to get any https:// site to open normally, but it immediately gives the "This page cannot be displayed" screen any time I try to go to a http:// address.

Applications that have their own internet access still work. For example her Virus scanner and the Spyware Blaster she has installed are both able to pull updates from the internet. I can also get radio streams through WMP.

The operating system is WindowsXP Home Edition with SP2 and the browser is IE 6.0.2900. I used ipconfig to verify that the connection to my router was being made properly. I can ping the router and other computers on the local net.

I compared her network connection settings with mine and didn't see any obvious differences, but I may have not looked deep enough. Any ideas on what would cause this?

Thanks!

What I would do is check the Security settings under Internet properties. Also take a look at the "restricted sites" section. I would guess that the browser security settings are set way too high.

On the Advanced tab, click "restore defaults".

Take a look at the Add-Ons on the Programs tab. Anything suspicious there?

Scan for spyware using the big 3 - Ad-aware, Spybot, Microsoft Antispyware.

Delete cookies, temporary Internet cache, and the history - it's amazing how many problems this fixes.

To get your mom online in the meantime, download Firefox and let her use that. Who knows - she might switch!

After trying all of the above with no success, I used the old "What was the last thing you did while it was working?"

She had downloaded and installed Skype then bought a phone and re-installed Skype from the CD that came with the phone.

I removed the VoIP and Skype software, then uninstalled all network clients, protocols, and services. After re-start, I re-installed the network protocols, clients and services and she is happily accessing all web sites again.
