Recently, my IE8 pages have started freezing for 30 secs at a time. Using Task Manager, culprit was obvious - IE8 was using 70-98% of CPU cycles - consistently with little else except Kaspersky AV running on system.

The sinister thing is, IE8 will run for minutes at a time at this CPU usage rate - with nothing (authorized) running Internet access!

I tried my What's Running program to spot just exactly what in IE8 is so busy, but it doesn't tell you that. I switched off the anti-virus, with no difference - as I type this with NOTHING else running, IE8 is running at 98% . . .

Can you help?

Rob

Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

IMPORTANT: Do not fix anything

Please run HijackThis again.

This time, in the Notepad window, click Format > Word Wrap.

If Word Wrap is already checked, uncheck it and please post a new HijackThis log.

Also, have you tried disabling your McAfee Site Advisor or running IE8 without the Add-ons?

***** I took the suggestion of disabling add-ons and there is a dramatic drop in CPU cycle usage - I am now trying to find just which add-on was causing the problem *******

Are you aware of any restrictions in IE8? Ever had Spybot S&D on your computer?

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Dear Phantom,

Downloaded latest Flash Player - but your suggestion of disabling add-ons (and selectively enabling again) solved whatever it was. The newly-enabled add-ons are behaving (the only add-on I left disabled was the Sun Java stuff, which I really don't understand very well, and which Kaspersky hates . .. )

Thank you!!!!

HI,

Just saw your last message.

I have indeed had Spybot on this system, but not for three years. Not too sure what these mean:

"O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present "

rob

PS Working fine, but Tech Guy page loads with format garbled, on Refresh it's OK.

If you don't have Spybot anymore, run HijackThis again.

Select Do a system scan only.

Put a check mark on both following entries:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Click Fix checked.
