Ok here are a few problems I am having yet again.. and i have no fricking clue why. First it started last week when my automatic updates showed I had updates they are cumulative security update for internet explorer 6 service pack 1 ( kb905915) and update for windows xp ( kb910437 ) and then malicious software removal tool ( kb890830 ). I am not able to get any of those to install. I get the message there was an error in the installation of this file. whether I try to update all at once or each one individually. NO LUCK. now 2nd thing is I go into control panel double click on system icon and nothing will open up. so i cant get any of that fixed. 3rd. My son got a virgin mp3 player 5gig. it wont finish the install on it.. I am wondering if there is something wrong with my computer thats not letting me install things all the way.. there have been other instances where install wont work.. any ideas please? here is my hijack log. Oh and I have ran adaware.. spybot and housecalls.. all clean and OK ohhh just a note right after I ran the hijack log and copied it in here.. my sytem thing opened up .. literally at least 5 minutes after I clicked on it in control panel.

There is nothing wrong in the Scanlog

1 > have you tried doing a System Restore to a date prior to these problems?
2> Copy full and exact error messages and report those.
3 > Also run eventvrw.msc and look for associated errors in the System and Applications logs.

Double click those to access properties and use the little copy icon on the description window to copy and then paste them here.

ok.. tried the eventvrw.msc and this is the error i got.

"Windows cannot find eventvrw.msc. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again. To search for a file click start button and then click search"

I did that several times.. retyping it. and did the search thing nothing came up for that file. I will attempt the system restore again but last i remember it didnt work either.

Sorry, typo on my part. It's

eventvwr.msc

What happened with System Restore? The whole process usually takes me only about 5 minutes.

how do i read the system and application logs? just clicking on them dont work.. I get unable to complete the operation on "System". The interface is unknown. and I dont know what is happening with system restore. I choose a date I want to restore to. it does that.. then i click next to actually do the restore and it just hangs there.. it wont go anywhere after I hit next. I can do back and cancel and it does both those right away but system restores next button isnt doing anything.

Run services.msc and verify that the "Event Log" is a listed service and that it is running and it's startup mode is set to automatic.

If you don't see it, or cannot start the service, run regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog

Is it there?

If it is, highlight it and select File > Export.

Save it twice. Once as Type HIVE

And once as Type Text (.txt)

Upload the TEXT file save here as an attachment so I can compare it with mine.

It didn't upload.

But please give me complete feedback.

Was Event Log a listed service in the services list?
If there, was the service started or did you try to start it?

The TEXT file save of the registry edit has not been uploaded as an attachment. Make sure it is the TEXT version not the HIVE that you are trying to upload. It must have a .txt extension.

If it is uploaded correctly you will see it present as an attachment.

sorry.. ok when i went to services via start/run it was listed but when i clicked on start it wouldnt thats when i got that error message.
What error message?

yes thats whats in the .zip file is the txt version. its 253kb long and here only allows for 200kb for uploads thats why I had to zip it.. but its the full version once its unzipped

I don't see anything wrong with the service entry.

Run eventvwr.msc again

If you still get the same error trying to view a log, and cannot see anything in the right hand pane, try RIGHT clicking on the log file and select "Clear All Events".

Do you get an error message (copy exactly), or a prompt to save the log before clearing it? If the latter, just go ahead and clear it.

This will blank it out. Check for new entries after reboots and new operations and see if any errors are listed.
