I have just discovered my Internet Explorer has been invaded by a virus. Going to Internet Options/Security/Restricted section and pressing the 'Sites' button I now have a long (and growing!) list of rather nasty looking sites. With a lot of patience I managed to delete the majority, but a stubborn few still remain. (Moreover the list seems to start growing again the next time I surf) . Hitherto this section has always been empty of entries. I will be extremely grateful if anyone can suggest a remedy that might cleanse my system again.
I suppose I have been lucky up to now and not experienced this problem before, so dont really know where to start. All I have tried is running Spybot (and I have AVG and Zone Alarm Firewall installed) but it hasn't made any difference.

    • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    • Click on Install.
    • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    O2 - BHO: Fire-Trust SiteHound - {C86AE9C0-0909-4DDC-B661-C1AFB9F5AE53} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {73F7F495-A325-4C52-BE48-5F97FA511E89} - (no file)
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.spysearchdestroy.com

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

[IMG] Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

    Upgrading Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
    • Click on Continue.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. alternate download link 1 alternate download link 2
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I am most grateful for the very detailed instructions you have given me - which I think I have followed precisely.
Unfortunately, entries are still showing in the Internet Options/Security/Restricted Site list.
Would there be any point in my going through the procedure again?

Thanks again for your suggestion. No I had not turned on Spybot immunisation, but have now, and subsequently run Spybot again.
Yesterday I spent a considerable time again(Working Off-line, and accessing Internet Options through the Control Panel) in deleting most of the entries in the Restricted Zone sites for the second time , but almost immediately it began to fill up again. It seems to me then that whatever is causing this is buried somewhere deep in my computer, so it looks as if I may be stuck with it, so am naturally feeling a bit despondent.. I have stopped using Internet Explorer now and use Firefox solely,
I do thank you sincerely for the effort you have put in - and if you have any other ideas I will be most grateful to try them.

The restricted sites are not legit sites, right? If not then I'm guessing they are getting put there by WatchDog.

    Hello Friend,
Sorry for delay in responding - I was away yesterday,
I am not familiar with Watchdog - is this a good or a bad program - and is it harmless?. A large number of the site addresses appear to be corrupted, inasmuchas they are many permutations of the letters contained in real addresses, but some of them look like real sites but of an unsavoury nature.

Watchdog is now part of AVG. I'm not sure exactly what it does that's why I said I'm guessing. I can not find anything that describes it's function other than it is a part of AVG Internet Security.

It very much sounds as if you have guessed right - I dont think I will worry about it any more. I do thank you so much for the time you have donated to solving , what is perhaps not a problem after all!
