Suddenly out of the blue one day I cannot access Internet Options from the tools menu in IE7 on Vista Ultimate. I also cannot open Internet options from the control panel. When I click on it nothing happens. I tried to run Spybot. I tried running IE7 as administrator and it says: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. I checked and IE7 has full permissions and no restrictions. I am also logged in as an administrator. I tried sfc /scannow in an elivated command prompt and it said it found errors but couldn't fix them. I also ran system restore and it cannot restore anything no matter what date I choose. Can anyone explain what suddenly happened to my Vista out of the blue? I run the latest Mcafee by the way.

If the only suggestions are to reinstall or do a repair install then: I am going to go back to XP Pro. I know that Vista cost me $390.00 but it just has major problems randomly popup that can't easily be fixed. So here are a few questions about going back. Is there a program to convert all my e-mails from Windows Mail back to Outlook Express? Is there anything else I should be worried about or thinking about? Thanks for your help.

    -Jim

It sounds like you are infected. Post a log from HijackThis in the Malware forum and have a Gold Shield help you clean up.

There is no repair installation for Vista. Malware routinely changes permissions so you lose access to try to remove it.

I completly fixed the problem. I will let you know what it was and how I did it incase anyone else has this problem. From an elevated command prompt I typed sfc /scannow. When sfc was done it found errors but could not fix them. I went to c:/windows/logs/cbs/cbs.log and opened it in notepad. It was a huge file and took forever. The file was way to huge to sit there and read all day. So in notepad with the file open I pressed ctrl-f and typed "Cannot repair member file" without the quotes. (I found that info here:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228/en-us ) I found that there were about 10 or so errors all about the same file: rasman.dll I searched and searched the web for about an hour trying to figure out how to get this file off my Vista dvd. I eventually just found a website that had it for download for free. I downloaded the file and put it on my desktop. I used <reference removed> available for free at: <URL Removed> and used a file manager and opened c:/windows/system32 and renamed the rasman.dll to rasmanOLD.dll and copied the new rasman.dll file into the system32 folder. I rebooted the computer. Now everything works 100% my internet options, delete browsing history and a few other things work flawlessly. I guess I'll be keeping Vista around a bit longer. I hope this helps other people with the same problem.
