I have (my friend's) an Acer Aspire 4339-2618 Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). The problem is that neither the wifi nor Ethernet connections seem to work. I can successfully ping www.google.com and 8.8.8.8, but when I try to connect to the Internet a browser (IE and Chrome) message says "unable to connect to the Internet". I downloaded the Atheros AR5B95 driver to a flash drive and then installed it on the computer thinking that maybe this would help, but it didn't.

I ran Malwarebytes and removed over a hundred malicious items and over 700 non-malicious items, but the problem persists. I removed any McAfee and Norton software using removal tools and the only difference is that Chrome now has the Google search open, but I can't get anywhere else on the Internet. When I first started working with the laptop I was getting two error messages: one said "DMREngine has stopped working" and the other said, "SOS messaging has stopped working". After running Malwarebytes and JunkRemoval tool, I no longer get these messages when the computer boots and loads.

I did a CHKDSK repair and SFC /scannow thinking that may help, but it didn't.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

Go here, then click the large blue "Download Now @ Bleeping Computer" button to download and save AdwCleaner.exe to your desktop.

Close all open windows first, then double-click AdwCleaner.exe to load its main window.

Click the "Scan" button, then allow the scanning process to finish.
(Note: Several seconds may pass before the scanning process starts, so be patient.)

Click the "Cleaning" button, then click "OK".

Allow the cleaning process to finish.

When it's finished, click "OK" in each window that appears.

    The computer will restart.

When the log appears during restart, save it.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log here.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Go here, then click the large blue "Download Now @ Author's Site" button to download and save TFC.exe (Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer) to your desktop.

After it's downloaded and saved, close all open windows.

Double-click it to load its main window.

    Click the "Start" button.

If there are a large number of temp files or if there are multiple user accounts, the temp file deletion process may appear to freeze and may take a few minutes, so don't interfere with or abort it.

After it's finished, restart the computer.

I ran TFC and then rebooted. Problem still persists. I have to go to my work, but will return back here later on this evening. Thanks.

I was hoping a scan and clean with AdwCleaner and Temp File Cleaner By OldTimer would resolve the connection issue. :(

    ---------------------------------------------------------

The support site for the Acer Aspire 4339 series laptop indicated it has an Atheros ethernet device and an Atheros or Broadcom or Intel wireless device.

Go into the Device Manager and then expand the Network Adapters heading.

What are the exact descriptions listed there?

Does their properties window indicate they're working properly?

Device manager does not indicate that anything is wrong. The descriptions are as follows:

    —Atheros AR5B95 Wireless Network Adapter
—Atheros AR8152/8158 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller
    —Microsoft virtual wifi miniport adapter

I downloaded the Atheros AR5B95 Wireless Network Adapter driver onto a flash drive and then loaded it on the laptop, but nothing changed so I didn't bother with the other two drivers. Windows indicates that the unit has the most recent drivers.

A long shot, but worth trying.

Control Panel > Network and Sharing Centre > Internet Options > Connections > Lan Settings > Untick the Proxy box.

If it works, find the proxy settings in Chrome and blank them too.

I just noticed that a program called Strongvault backup is listed in Programs and Features. I've tried to uninstall it, but it won't uninstall. Could this have anything to do with not being able to access the Internet with IE11 or Chrome? If so, any idea on how to uninstall this program?

    thanks

Have you tried resetting IE? Internet Options-->Advanced Tab --> Reset button?

Also, download the free version of RevoUninstaller and it should get rid of the Strongvault program. Run Revo, tell it to uninstall, when the uninstall fails, do an advanced scan and do a select all and delete of whatever it finds.

Reboot will probably be required afterwards.

The problem was with the F-Secure anti-malware (virus) program. I downloaded the F-Secure removal tool, ran it, uninstalled the F-Secure program and now both Chrome and IE11 are connecting to the Internet.

Thanks again to everyone for their assistance.

I did try reset. Thanks for the RevoUninstaller suggestion. I will definitely do that.
