    Windows Updates result from millions and millions of users finding flaws and vulnerablities long after Micro$oft releases an Operating System. These vulnerabilities become well-known to folks who would like to do harm or steal information from your computer. Many many worms, viruses, and trojans infect machines which are not patched with the latest updates.

    for your first answer, yes i mean Internet Explorer Home page. for your second answer, in terms of more convincing, can you give an example harmful effects of them? for example did you infect a trojan or other else? this persons think that it's a fruitless and futile struggle to download the updates. they say we havent seen any virus or trojan on our pc, why shall we need updates? as for me, i cant explain them cause i am not sufficient.

    ps: sorry for my english, i am not good at

    The Sasser and Blaster worms infected millions of unpatched Windows computers a few years ago. There are still variants of those worms propagating and infecting more machines when a patch from Microsoft will prevent the infection. There are many more examples, but I chose those two because they are well known throughout the world. Unpatched Wndows operating systems can be taken over by hackers, used as robots to spread spam, spyware, trojans, and all sorts of nasty things.

    If you are having trouble with Windows Update (it sounds like you are) and your Internet Explorer home page is changing on you, you may already be infected.

    If this is the case, you should post a new thread in the security forum, including a hijackthis log. Here's how:

    (From Derek
    Microsoft MVP/Windows - Security)

    * Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe
    Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
    Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
