    Hi

My pc takes an age to start up(approx 5-7 mins), it's randomly freezing and switching itself off, and will not shut down automatically, I have to do it manually. Can anyone help?

I would suggest a Hijackthis log

    -------------------------------------------

    http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe

    Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
    • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
    • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
    • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
    • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
    • Click the Scanning Control tab.
    • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
      • Close browsers before scanning.
      • Scan for tracking cookies.
      • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
    • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
    • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
    • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
    • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
    • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
    • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
    • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
    • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
      • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
      • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
      • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
      • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
    • Click Close to exit the program.

I don't see any problems in the log so is your machine making any noise? Does it feel hot?

Make your the little (usually red) switch is set to the appropriate power setting on the back of your power supply. if you live in the USA this should be 110volts. Also if you have some kind program that came with your motherboard for monitoring temperatures, use it and make you have decent tempuratues, like under 50 celcius i suppose? if you can find your temps, post them here. also, make sure you dont have giant dustbunnies or pools of dust sitting in your case. and hopefully you have at least a few case fans.. :D

What about the switch on your power supply, was that set to the correct voltage for where you live?

    Hi

I opened my pc up, and checked the power supply.Couldn't find any switch??

Switched it back on, and guess what, it booted up within 30 seconds. This pc really does have a mind of it's own. I'll see how it goes and if I get any more problems I'll get straight back. Cheers for your help tho, it was well appreciated.

Look on the back, there should be a little switch somewhere near where you plug the cord into your power supply :D :D :D

The only switch in relation to the power supply is on the back, but that only turns it on and off(I'm in the UK, Is it different somehow in the US?).
My apologies for being a little ignorant when it comes to these things. Anyhow it starts up fine tho, but doesn't shut down automatically, any other advice?

What do you mean by it doesnt shut down automatically, as in when you press start -> shut down, it doesnt do anything related to shutting down?

Right click in a blank spot on your desktop, clk Properties, clk Screen Saver tab, when it opens clk on the Power tab and set your Monitor and Hard Drive to how many minutes you want. Monitor less than hard drive or set it for default settings, clk apply , then OK. That should take care of it shutting itself down
