My Symantec antivirus detected a trojan the other day. Having just had one about a month ago, I decided to just back up my files and format my computer. Symantec told me that it had caught and deleted the trojan, but I wanted to be sure, so I decided to do a format. This is what I did about a month ago, and the problem was solved and everything was peachy. Not so much this time. I put everything on my external hard drive (Wester Digital My Book Essential Edition 320 GB) and got about formatting. Reinstalled the drivers and all of that . . . basically got it back to where I want, with all of my files and programs back on. I went to click on my HD to start moving things back to my main HD and the message "c:\resycled\boot.com is not a valid win32 app" appeared. After some Googling, I came across the program Flash Disinfector. Ran the program and voila! I was able to access my drives again. Problem is, now when I my PC goes to sleep or hibernates, upon awakening, I receive the same error message when attempting to open my external HD. Another run of FD and I'm able to access it.

I'm also having trouble with safley shutting down and removing my HD. Windows keeps telling me that it cannot be stopped etc. Any ideas/thoughts/solutions for these issues. It's become extremely frustrating for me.

In case this helps, I DLed and ran HijackThis. Here's my log:

    UPDATE:
This morning my Symantec detected trojan.fakeavalert (two of them) and Downloader.MisleadApp (just one). It claims to have cleaned them by deletion but I know that's not the case. I thought I had eliminated them by formatting, but I was clearly mistaken. Back to square one for me.

You should have eliminating them by formatting. My guess is that the external drive you have connected is infected.

That's what I was thinking too. I think the USB flash drive I have is also infected. Any solutions from AcaCandy or any others?

I'm not sure, I'll see if I can find a security person.

I'd probably start by running scans on the infected devices and see if you can't get to the bottom of that, then, I'd do another format on the main hard drive.

I'm running a Malwarebytes full scan on all of my drives. I did it once on just my C: drive and it detected two infected objects and successfully deleted them. I'm currently running the aforementioned second scan and I'll post both logs when it's completed. I'd like to make a second format my last resort just because of the amount of time it takes to get everything going again. That said, I'll do it if I have to

It would be greatly appreciated if you could send a security person this way AcaCandy. The service you provide is tremendous. Thanks! (y)

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix: especially follow the advice about installing the recovery console

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell us when you reply

lets see what else is vulnerable apart from the obvious java showing in the logs

scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Can't seem to get that scan to work properly. To start with, it doesn't detect my Java, and for some reason it does not start the scan. Not sure what the issue is, but I have had issues with my Internet connection today.

I just went ahead and did a complete format tonight. Wiped my external HD, flash drive and internal HD and reinstalled Windows. Hopefully this solves it, but if not I'll let you know.
