In this case, it is a laptop's harddrive in a usb caddy.
I plug it into the usb socket of this VAIO computer with Windows XP Home Edition.
The computer knows that a 'usb mass storage device' had been plugged in, and I have the option to 'Safely Remove Hardware'.
Question is, where is the option to access this drive?
I don't see it in My Computer.
I'm sure this disk caddy didn't come with any installation cd.

    thank you!

Try right click on my computer \ manage \ disk management. Do you see it in there?

    Hi, yes.
There is a no entry symbol and it says 'Disk 2 - Unknown' 'Not Initialized'

Is there a chance initializing means wiping it out?

I think that if you initialize the drive you would then have to format it before you can use it, so then yes it would wipe your drive. Is there a lot of data on the drive.

ooh, thank gawd you told me that.
So, what about accessing the files on this disk?
Is there a probable reason the computer doesn't want to?

    It says "55.8GB Unallocated"

The hard disk is from a mac laptop. Could it be that windows just won't recognise it for that reason?

I know that the drive is mostly full.

    Thanks
