First run this uninstaller to get rid of the peper.a trojan:

    http://www.mjc1.com/files/peperpage/uninst.exe

*Note: Just click on the uninst.exe and let it run. When it is finished it will just close. There will be no dialogue. Also you must be connected to the internet for the uninstaller to be effective.

Also a new version of Hijack This has been released so get rid of the old one and Click here to download the new one, come back here and post the log from it after you run the peper uninstaller.

I didn't say anything about CWShredder. Did you run the peper uninstaller?

I downloaded the uninstaller and ran it; it was so quick, I could barely see it run; and the new hijack log was created after that. I continue to see different unexplained entries in my msconfig startup list, as well.

This key name is also in my registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\28G#C2L3#9QC9E

Well peper is still there. Try this:

Click here to downloadthe PeperFix.exe tool to get rid of the peper trojan:

Click on the PeperFix.exe to launch it.

Click the Find and Fix button.

It will scan the %systemroot% folder and locate all the peper files. You will be prompted to restart your computer. Restart and it will delete the peper files.

After you restart come back here and post another Hijack This log.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Sorry it took a day to reply; Thanks flrman 1; you saved the day.

The nasties seem to be gone. I've been using spywareblaster, cwshredder, spybot search and destroy, norton antivirus, etc. Where am I going wrong? Any additional precautions to be taken? Should I download SP2? I've been hesitating because of possible conflicts with installed software.

Should I replace adaware 6.0 with adaware se? If so, what settings should I use?

I also have this registry key that I don't recognize:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\28G#C2L3#9QC9E

    Anything to be concerned about?

Yes replace Adaware 6 with SE.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

    Restart your computer.

    Delete that reg entry.
