This problem just started a couple of days ago. After about 5 minutes of doing nothing on my PC (downloading files counts as "nothing") it locks up at where ever it was at the time. The mouse is movable but has the "loading" icon going and nothing is click-able--even the clock freezes.
The only recent changes I have made were on the 9th (right around when this started) when I installed a huge Windows update including security, office, and .NET framework updates, and I also updated DivX, which I have since uninstalled out of suspicion of being the problem.
I have tried changing the idle settings to always being off, which didn't help, and I don't use a screensaver. I have selective startup going with only microsoft services and a couple I trust (AVG, iPod, NVIDIA, and Steam). Also, attempting to system restore back to before the big Windows update failed due to a "Data is Invalid" error. I also doubt that overheating is the cause seeing as how the the processor use is at about 14% when it freezes.
I am confident that I don't have a virus and would appreciate any help, because trying to download a 10gb game client with slow internet is usually best done overnight.
    I am running Windows 7.

Does this happen if you're not downloading anything?

Yes it does, i've tested it. After about 6 minutes it happens. It lets me click around for a short time with just (Not Responding) programs while slowly becomes totally frozen.

It didn't do it the other day though when I was watching a movie and doing nothing else for 2 hours straight.

Okay, so I was working on fixing this problem a little more today. I tried that long process of only using half of the startup services, seeing if the problem persists, and continuing to use half until you isolate the defective service. I do know that this problem is from services, because my computer ran all night in safe mode, and it also ran when I turned all services off.

The problem gets complicated though. As the computer still froze as I eliminated more and more "good" services from the list, I managed to get it down to about 18 services, one of which was supposedly causing the problem. But then I tried something else--I enabled all services except those 18, and guess what. Yep, it still froze. I feel like I'm on a wild goose chase with this process, can anyone point me in the right direction?

If anyone was following this, I just reinstalled windows because it started freezing even when not idle. Luckily the problem is fixed now.
