I am using my pc to write this so cannot download the tsg sysinfo the now but can if it really needed just using the laptop as little as possible

I have my sisters laptop here she says she got an error message about backing her stuff up but she can't remember exactly what it said exactly but as of yet I have not seen this message.

I checked speccy and under the S.M.A.R.T status it reads warning so I guess it was a message regarding that.

I did download HDDScan but have no understanding of these things.

I can post a report from HDDScan or you can get me to use another program if its better I know you guys have your own set of programs you use.

Laptop is:

Compaq Presario CQ58
OS: Win 7x64

so any advice would be great :)

Do not attempt to download anything else if the report is correct re the smart status, using the drive more than necessary may well just result in complete failure

click the windows button and type in search
cmd

when it appears above as command prompt
right click and click run as admin

the cmd window should be headed
Administrator Command Prompt

type at the C:\ etc prompt

chkdsk /r

agree to run on restart and do so
watch the results
it is a five stage check and will tell you if bad sectors are recorded

If you can also post the report from HDDScan that would be great

Hd's dont repair themselves, and the SMART shows it failing. Back up any data you want, but I think its dead.

Compaq Presario CQ58
What's the complete model number of that CQ58 series laptop?
(A dash and additional characters after CQ58 comprises the complete model number)

Also advise what the exact part/product number(P/N) on it is.

It'll be on the labels on the bottom of the laptop case and/or inside the battery compartment.

Depends on the size of the HD; 3 or so hours isnt unheard of. Of course, chkdsk will obviously stress it, so it easily could just quit at any time.

Whats the size of the HD?
