I just bought a toshiba laptop I think it is a toshiba a63
well every once in a while the hard drive will make a hard "tap" or click sound
Like a watch or ring that hit a piece of wood.
Then the computer will lag for about 1 sec
Is this normal with a laptop?
    Or is the drive bad?
    Thx Nick_02

Where did you buy it? Is it returnable?

Clicking noises and hard drives are not conducive ;)

Ah, any reason as to why, since you said you just bought it?

Certainly they have some type of return policy or guarantee? How did you pay for it? Hopefully via credit card.

If it's defective, they should waive the restocking fee.

As I mentioned above, that is NOT normal for any computer. A clicking sound coming from the hard drive is an accident waiting to happen. They have tech people (although most I've dealt with are poor examples) --- who should be able to listen to the sound and advise you.

Good luck. Laptop drives are more expensive than desktop drives.

    Howdy folks...

Yes clicking noises in hard drives are a bad sign, that immanent failure is about to happen...

    But...

I'm curious, since this is a laptop...

This click you hear, does it happen after a period of inactivity ?

If so the drive may be "waking up" after being inactive ( to check it, go into Power Management and and don't let it shut down the hard drive )...

    Just curious...

    Good call JM ;)

I assumed the lag was happening WHILE the computer was being used.

    Silly me for assuming ;)

    Howdy folks...

Aca...I do get one right every now and then :D ;) ( just kidding :D )...

    nick_02...

No problem...it's just that from my experence, is that the IBM Travel Star is notorious for this, and I was curious ( just to add to my hate list for IBM drives )...

    Glad it's solved...
