I've been trying to connect this laptop to my girlfriend's wifi for days on end now, and it continues to connect to the router, but not the internet.
When connected it says "No internet Access", but other computers on this network connect to the internet fine.
when trying to connect to the internet, it says "cant communicate with the device or resource" and also "security or firewall settings might be blocking the connection"

    Things i've tried so far:
entering DNS manually, and then again, but changing DNS to Google's servers
    I've reset the TCP/IP protocal

I've got no more ideas. Anyone else have any?

will the pc work on other wireless networks

can we see an ipconfig /all

what windows version do you have - (there is an issue with a AR5007(EG) adapter and vista )

can you connect by cable to the router and does it work

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply
Note: you will see entries named Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: we dont need to see that information - JUST the infomation above those entries

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

    For Windows 8
to open a Cmd Prompt or an Administrator Cmd prompt from the Desktop. Use Win + X and choose Command Prompt or Command Prompt (Admin) from the list.

This should work for all windows version, XP, Vista, W7
Hold the Windows key and press R

    then type CMD

then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

    ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
    to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
    Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.

remove both and see if that helps

    --------------------------------------------------------------

    Norton Removal Tool
I would recommend that you restart the PC and run the removal tool for a second time - I have found instances where the removal tool needs to be run twice to fully remove all traces of norton and symantec from the PC
    https://www-secure.symantec.com/nor...t=Norton Core&pvid=f-core-cur&version=current

All Versions - The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2010/2009/2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products, Norton 360 and Norton SystemWorks 12.0 from your computer.

    Mcafee Removal Tool

After removing the mcafee product - if you have a subscription and would like to re-install mcafee

Alright, it began to work after mcafee was uninstalled. should I go ahead and do norton and get a different antivirus?

Thank you so much for this. You've helped a man more than you know.

    yes

if you dont want to put mcafee back on

if you decide not to put Mcafee back on the PC or not to subscribe to the service

i'm not an expert here - but if you look through the security forum, you will see a lot of recommendations for windows 7/vista

The windows 7/vista firewall is considered adequate and especially if you are connected behind a router.
Have a read in our "general security" forum and look for the advice from our security gurus.

Several excellent free antivirus programs are available (But you should only ever have 1 on the PC at a time otherwise this can cause issues ).

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) I personally use and install in the computers that I work on.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security_essentials/default.aspx
If you are using windows 8 - you already have this product and its now called windows defender (different to the earlier windows versions, also known as "windows defender")

Avast i used to use and recommend to clients -but the subscription each year meant a few clients did not update and some ended up with malware/virus - so i stopped recommending and now use MSE - although I have since discovered the subscription renewal is now much easier
    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

    AntiVir
    http://majorgeeks.com/Avira_AntiVir_Personal_-_FREE_Antivirus_d955.html

EST Nod 32 also gets a lot of very good reviews although it is not free
    ESET NOD32
    http://www.eset.com/home/

these Two programs are also recommended to be on the PC and can be on with any of the above antivirus programs.

Malwarebytes I personally use and install in the computers that I work on.
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

superantispyware I personally use and install in the computers that I work on.
