we need a little more information please - model would help
    also your budget

is this a new machine - very rare to see 256mb memory

i would not have a 256mb machine running XP - I do have a toshiba with 256mb and its very slow.
if it has vista on it - then forget it 2mb for vista

your in the UK - have a look in staples - they often have some very good deals on laptops - i have purchased three from them for friends and family -

a fuji seimens had 1GB of memory 100GB harddrive £399 that was around xmas

    i noticed a few machines there for 399 / 499 just yesterday

    Connecting to Internet
you need to be more specific -
you could just use dialup - so you plug the laptop into the phone line (and it should have a 56K modem ) then you can dialup the internet - costs about 1p a minute and is very slow
    OR
if the laptop has a wireless connection, you can go to cafes / Hotels with internet connection and use it there for a fee
    OR
you can get broadband installed at home - via the telephone or cable and these proces vary considerably - but say £9 to £25 but depends on whos in the telephone exchange as to price
    UKONLINE do a cheap deal

well the toshiba I have similar spec.
anyway, is it running XP ???

it will be slow - but we use the toshiba for email and websufing - watching some educational DVDs and its OK but is SLOW

looks like it has a CD writer (Not DVD writer) and DVD player

what do you want to use the machine for

check the spec to see if its a
    LAN (10/100)
    or
    WLAN - wireless

also if it has a 56K modem - for dialup

ETAF is telling you the truth! XP on 256 meg memory is slow. For XP you need at least 512 meg and for Vista even Microsoft recommends at least 1 gigabyte. My rule of thumb is to get at least double the memory that Microsoft says you need.

Isn't 200 pounds around 500 dollars US? You can get a "real" computer for $500 to $800 if you shop around.
