Edit: I realized, that this is probably in the wrong forum, and should be in HARDWARE, since I have a sneaking suspicion that it's hardware problems, not software/drivers. I'd just delete this, but... the best I seem to be able to do is edit. :( Sorry!!!!

Hey. It's me again, with another problem (even though my first hasn't been solved yet).

The sound on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 8600) has suddenly turned into this low, muffled, grainy thing; making everything inaudible. The thing is, this just 'happened'. As far as I can tell, I didn't do anything to trigger it at all! Nothing has been installed, it hasn't been dropped, mishandled or anything, so I'm fearing for the worst; hardware failure.

Is there a way I can check this out?

My device manager tells me I have...

    Legacy Audio Drivers
    SigmaTel C-Major Audio

I tried to update these, but it seems to be a growing trend to make it impossible for us newbies to find the drivers we need for our products. :p

Anyway, if anyone can help me with this, I'll owe them big time. It's bad enough I've lost my schoolwork and possibly my chance of continuing highschool, but now I've got to deal with a soundless laptop? Yay. :/ Things are looking up.

Also, I know it's not my speakers. I've tried both with the laptop's own speakers and my headphones. Both give the same effect. :(

    Thanks for reading.

I believe this is the driver you need. R107057.EXE.
Correction, that is for 64 bit Windows XP
This should work for your Windows XP R114282.EXE.
