My home has a WLAN that my dad's newer laptop (not the D520), and even my little sister's iPod touch can connect to better than I can. I need a detailed walkthrough on how to connect my laptop to a D-Link DIR-655 wireless router.

The question depends on a coupld of things.

What version of operating system XP SP1/2/3, Vista or Windows 7?

Do you get a wireless icon either Dell utility(Green Bar Chart Icon) or Wireless Zero Config(Mini PC with 3 semi circles)?

If its the DELL utility here is a guide:

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/network/p70008/EN/utility.htm

If its not come back and some one here will talk you through.

If you have neither then please ensure you have Wireless enabled in the Laptop BIOS. F2 key on booting!

I don't know what version of XP (I didnt even know there was more than one), and it has never been connected to the internet at my home so there is no type of bars or anything like that on my desktop screen. It was bought second-hand from a school system so the memory was wiped and the basic operating programs reinstalled (as far as I know).

    XP-Home or XP-Pro? Patch level of XP, SP1, SP2, SP3?

What type of encryption are you running on the router?

What's the exact make/model of the laptop? Are you using the internal wireless or an add-on adapter?

    Hi

If its second hand and been wiped there is a high probability you dont have the original Dell CD(s) that came with the laptop. One labelled XP for the operating system and one labelled Drivers & Documentation???

So I am guessing you will need to download and install the wireless driver for the card built into the Lattitude D520 which is usually the 1390 – WiFi 802.11a/b/g Dell Mini Card,

    So please goto website:

    http://support.us.dell.com/support/...typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=187888

Download the file and follow the instructions below.

1.Click Download Now, to download the file.
2.When the File Download window appears, click Save (Windows XP
users will click Save) this program to disk and click OK. The Save In:
    window appears.
3.From the Save In: field, click the down arrow then click to
select Desktop and click Save. The file will download to your desktop.
4.If the Download Complete window appears, click Close. The file
    icon appears on your desktop.

    Install

1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled R140745.EXE.
2.The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or
unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R140745. Write down this path so the executable (I.e.
Setup.exe) file can be found later.
    3.The Self-Extractor window appears.
    4.Click OK.
5.After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor
window is still open, close it.
6.Click the Start button and then click Run.
7.Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R140745 in the Open textbox and then click OK.
    8.Follow the on-screen installation instructions.

After doing all this and maybe a reboot do you finally have the wireless icon in the bottom right of XP I was referring to earlier? Try connecting if so.
