Go into the Device Manager and advise what's listed in Network Adapters.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I personally have a wired setup with 3 desktops connected to a wired Linksys router, so my knowledge about a wireless setup is somewhat limited.

You might want to click "Report" and have your thread moved to the NETWORKING section.

That is extremely strange. What is the brand and model of the router or modem to which you are trying to connect?

Make sure the following services are Started (Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services).

DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

Run these repairs and then show another ipconfig /all, please.

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2 or SP3.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

I have AT&T Uverse and the router is Netgear GS608 v2 (wired). The modem has built-in wireless.

I get the same result:

I have no idea what's going on. You are getting a (New Jersey) public IP address, the Default gateway is the same as the IP, and there is no Dhcp or DNS server even listed.

If you have some kind of software running that's trying to set up a PPP connection that may partially explain it, but I really don't know.

athlonfx:

Do the following, as it might give TerryNet some insight as to what's going on with your computer, and it may show some unknown problems.

Go here and click the green icon to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

Sorry, the ipconfig log above is wrong. Here's the correct log file below:

Personally, I would get rid of Spybot - Search & Destroy and Spyware Terminator and replace them with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware.

You have startup entries and service entries for programs and add-ons that I'm not familiar with, so I don't know if that's the cause of your connection problem.

When getting an APIPA (169.254.x.y) you shouldn't be getting a Default Gateway; so as long as we see that condition I'm not suspecting a security application.

Install the latest driver for the ethernet from your PC (or motherboard) manufacturer's web site and then run the stack/WINSOCK repairs again. If you still get the APIPA plus Default Gateway I suspect the NIC or motherboard is defective.

But, my suspicions don't completetely rule out a defective cable or other software problem.

I just restarted the affected computer today to re-install drivers and the problem's gone. I don't know what the issue was, but it works now. Getting the internet working was my Christmas Wish, so that could be an explanation ... ;) :D

Thanks for the help and Happy Holidays.
