I have a Dell Optiplex GX270. While at the log in screen, the keyboard and mouse intermittently work. If I plug in a wired keyboard and mouse, they don't work at all. When I put my credentials in, and log in, it will freeze at different spots. Sometimes with the mouse in the middle and a blank screen, sometimes when it says "loading personal settings."

I can get into Safe Mode, but can't run Windows Update or do much else to fix the problem.

    Advice?

I restored to week earlier. Did not fix or change the problem. In fact, I had to go back into safe mode after a few tries just to see the "safe mode restore complete" window.

Update, I actually got into Windows after restoring to an earlier point via System Restore. In Windows, it said the restore failed. Once in there, i went to update, and my stuff froze up again.

No, it sounds like normal reading when Windows is actually loading. Then just quiets down when it freezes.

Does tapping F12 on startup give you diagnostics options

During Post, yes. I have started the IDE drive diagnostics. Is that where you were going for?

Try this in Safemode try Check disk again

click Start>>Run type cmd click Ok.

In the Command Prompt type chkdsk /r click Enter Note there is a space between chkdsk and /r

You will be asked if you want a check disk to run on next startup click Y and then press Enter

    Restart your PC

It says I can't perform the task over a network. I am not on a network. I ran it through the properties on the c drive. On reboot. Doesn't perform.
