    Basic Facts:
Windows 98 (don't think it is SE)
    AMD K6-2 366 mhz.
    160 megs RAM
Compaq Presario 1275-it is a laptop

I have a Compaq 56K-DF modem in this computer. Whenever I connect to the internet, I can hear the number being dialed through the speakers, and that is as far as it goes. After the number is dialed, there is no more noise coming through the speakers, except for a static like "clicking" about every 30 secs. What does this mean? The phone line is connected to the computer when I dial, but I did try it once with the phone line disconnected, and everything was the same as if it were connected. Today I was reading on a site and discovered that the Lucent Win Modem driver could be installed to replace the Compaq driver. "Lucent" is written on the big black chip on the modem. I upgraded to the Lucent Driver ver. 5 When I tried to connect, the same thing happened as before. Please help!

    No dialup error message?

If you connect a phone directly to the outlet being used, can you get a dial tone?

Also try inserting a duplex phone plug, if you have one, into the laptop and see if you can get a dial tone connecting a phone to that with the laptop also connected to the phone jack, but not dialing.

Not sure whether this should be considered a "hardware" problem since you don't really have any hardware you can muck with on the laptop so I guess I'll leave you here unless you'd like it moved.

I'm a little fuzzy on these things, but I believe you can also access a log detailing what the modem is trying to do. Does the modem show itself as installed with no flags in the Device Manager?

On the Diagnostics tab > more info of the modem in the Control panel, what port is it on? Try letting Windows redetect it.

And for what it's worth, you've probably already been there...

Thanks for replying Rollin Rog. Just so you know my setup, the laptop is setup right next to my new Dell Dimension 8400 desktop. I use the same phone jack and phone cord on the Dell as I do on the laptop, and the Dell connects perfetly, so there is no problem there. Yesterday I updated the modem driver from Ver. 5 to Ver. 8.3, the latest driver. Now the modem is called Agere Win Modem. I still have the same connecting problem as described before. I also looked in device manager and the modem is working fine. The modem is on COM 2. I have accessed the modem log, but there seems to be nothing unusual there. Thanks for the help, hopefully I'll get more.

Sheesh, I'm not sure how much else I can suggest. You haven't mentioned actually removing the modem from the device manager and having it redetected, though I can't hold out much hope for it since it appears to be recognized and working in the Device Manager.

Can you post the modem log, I'd like to see where it terminates, not that I have any special skills in reading these, but I'll compare it with what I see on my Win98 system.

Is anything else connected to this phone line, such as a fax?

The current drivers for the Lucent Win modem is version 8.30 and can be downloaded from here.

Never mind what I said. I didn't realize that you'd already found the 8.30 drivers. They've worked just fine in the Lucent Win modem in my desktop.

There was a PCMCIA modem in the laptop, and once I got the connector for it, it worked great. I think that Lucent modem was junk, so I trashed it. the laptop works great, thanks for all your help.
