I'm wondering if a memory stick should be replaced and if so how often?

I have a memory stick I first used in October 2001 with just shy of 8000 Jpegs taken off it (I have grandkids) and it works just fine. I use a Lexar memory stick reader which probably puts more stress on the copper connections then loading directly from a camera, but I am adamently FOR using the reader since transfering photos is so easy. I don't think a memory stick has a life unless it is misused (leaving in a hot glove compartment or soaking it.) Its like a screwdriver-you can break it if you try but it ain't easy.
