    Good evening all.

Over the years my PC has gradually slowed down until I eventually took the plunge and decided to increase the memory, I used the scanner on crucial.com and upgraded from 1GB (2 x 512mb), to 2GB (2 x 1GB) and according to crucial.com these new modules are supposedly compatible with my system. The old modules are labelled M2U51264DS8HC3G-5T 512MB DDR-4000mHZ-CL3 PC32200U-30331 and the new modules are labelled 1GB DDR PC2700 and the installation of the new modules seemed to go without a hitch, also my PC did speed up briefly but after a couple of days it has got even slower than it was before with half the memory and sometimes it freezes completely.

I have since scanned my PC for malware, just in case, and the free Avast did find and remove a couple of things including a trojan but this didn't make any difference whatsoever to the speed, which if anything is getting even slower.

That's about as much as I can manage so I was wondering if anyone can help me to speed up my PC up again or have I just wasted £50 of my hard earned?

    Thanks in advance,

    Andy.

Is all of the RAM properly recognized and useable?

Likely just a coincidence and something else is causing the problem. Try checking Windows Event Viewer and see if Windows is logging any errors.

It appears you replaced the 512 MB DDR PC3200(DDR400) modules with 1 GB DDR PC2700(DDR333) modules.

What's the brand name and model name and model number of your computer?

Is it running Windows XP or some other version of Windows?

    Download and save the

    TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe)

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

As instructed please find information about my system specs:

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
    Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.66GHz, x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 7
    Processor Count: 2
    RAM: 1982 Mb
Graphics Card: ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series, 256 Mb
    Hard Drives: C: Total - 189556 MB, Free - 151453 MB;
    Motherboard: Intel Corporation, D101GGC
Antivirus: Microsoft Security Essentials, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Enabled

I've also run the Event Viewer and there are several errors and warnings in both the application and system folders before and before and after I installed the new memory.

My PC is an Aries Perfecta Dual, now defunct I think!

According to the delivery note the new memory modules are part number CT2KIT12864Z333.000 and the label on the old modules says they are Elixir Part number PC3200U 30331.

All 2 GB(2048 MB) of RAM appears to be recognized and is being used. (y)

It has an Intel D101GGC motherboard - which supports up to 2 GB(2048 MB) of RAM.

The recommended 1 GB(1024 MB) module for that motherboard is:

    184-pin DDR PC2700(DDR333), 2.5 volt, CL=2.5, unbuffered, non-ECC

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties.

Advise what's listed in the Computer: section at the bottom of the "General" tab - exactly as you see it there.

The bottom section is what I wanted.

The processor is running at its full rated speed. (y)

All 2.00 GB of RAM is being recognized and used. (y)

Note: It shows 1.93 GB because the other .07 GB is dedicated to the computer's devices.

Let's get a picture of what's installed and running in that computer and if any obvious issues need to be addressed.

Do the following in the order listed.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click it to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

    Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log file here.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

    Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

    It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE file here.

The first thing that jumps out at me is the massive number of programs that are auto-starting and running in the background.

A massive startup load will lengthen startup time and slow down that computer and cause other issues.

The second thing that jumps out at me is there being 2 antivirus programs(Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials) installed and running.

Multiple antivirus programs will fight each other and slow down that computer and cause other issues.

I can help you trim down that massive startup load, but you need to decide which antivirus program to uninstall/remove.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Unless Adobe AIR is needed and being used, uninstall/remove it.

Unless Adobe Media Player is needed and being used, uninstall/remove it.

Adobe Reader 8.3.1 needs to be updated to Adobe Reader 11.0.02

Java 7 Update 1 needs to be updated to Java 7 Update 21(1.7.0.21)

    Uninstall/remove PC Booster
These type of programs claim to fix problems and make a computer run faster, but in reality can do just the opposite.

Install the free version of SUPERAntiSpyware 5.6.0.1014 so it can be used with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware(which is already installed) to find and remove threats.

    Thanks Frank.

I have removed/uninstalled Adobe Air, Adobe Media Player and PC Booster and I have updated Adobe Reader and Java 7.

Regarding the 2 AntiVirus programs I only recently installed Avast when my PC slowed right down and Security Essentials failed to detect anything, Avast did find a few issues so I would like to stick with it in preference to MSE but will I still be able to keep Avast and to install SUPERAntiSpyware? Or will it be a choice of one or the other?

    Thanks,

    Andy.

If Avast is your choice, that's fine.

Avast will be auto-starting and running in the background.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware will NOT be auto-starting and running in the background.

The 3 of them will be fine together. (y)

    -----------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

Hi Frank, sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

I have uninstalled MSE, installed SuperAntipyware and run MSCONFIG, the list of Start up items is as follows:

    atiptaxx
    DrgToDsc
    rmctrl
    Dragdiag
    ISUSPM
    issch
    HPWuSchd2
    GoogleDesktop
    RTHDCPL
    Reader_sl
    AdobeARM
    jusched
    AgentMonitor
    realsched
    avastUI
    drst
    InsDetect
    GoogleToolbarNotifier
    cftmon
    msmsgs
    WMPNSCFG
    SUPERAntiSpyware
    HP Digital Imaging Monitor
    HP Image Zone Fast Start
    OpenOffice.org 3.3

I also forgot to mention that sometimes when I try to shut down Internet Explorer it opens the same window up 3 or 4 times and I have to shut them down one by one!

Go back to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Remove the checkmark in these startup entries:

    atiptaxx

    DrgToDsc

    rmctrl
(Leave this entry checked only if you use a remote control with the computer)

    ISUSPM

    issch

    HPWuSchd2

    GoogleDesktop

    RTHDCPL

    Reader_sl

    AdobeARM

    jusched

    realsched

    GoogleToolbarNotifier

    cftmon

    msmsgs

    WMPNSCFG

    SUPERAntiSpyware

    HP Image Zone Fast Start

    OpenOffice.org 3.3

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart.

    Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK.

Expand the services window so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click on these service entries, one at a time, to open their properties window:

    Adobe Flash Player Update Service

    Ati HotKey Poller

    ATI Smart

    Google Desktop Manager

    Google Update Service

    Google Update Service

    Google Software Updater

    InstallDriver Table Manager

    Mozilla Maintenance Service

    Pml Driver HPZ12

    RealNetworks Downloader Resolver Service

    RoxMediaDB

    RoxUpnpRenderer

    RoxUpnpServer

    Roxio Hard Drive Watcher

Set the "Startup Type" on Manual, then click Apply - OK.

After you're all done, close the services window and then restart the computer.

When the small "System Configuration Utility" window appears during restart, ignore its message about the computer being in diagnostic/selective startup mode.

Do NOT change it back to normal startup mode!

Put a checkmark in the "Do not show - -" box, then click OK to close that window.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

Wait for the computer to settle down from the restart.

    use it for awhile.

Advise if everything is still working okay.

Advise if speed and "snappiness" has improved.
