I have a Toshiba P205 laptop running Vista. I want to use the Speech Recognition program, but can't seem to make the microphone work. I have tried with the built-in mic and also a headset w/mic. I have looked around to see if it is muted, but can't find anything. Where should I look?

Control Panel, Sound, Recording tab. A green circle with a check by Microphone means it is connected properly.
If green bars are showing on the metet to right and are moving up and down, it is not muted.
If green shows , but does not move when you talk into the mike, check to see if the on /off switch on mike is on.
If there is no green showing it may be muted or the sound level may be too low.
To check, highlight Microphone and click Properties, Levels Tab. A red circle with slash in the box to the right of the slide bar means your mike is muted. Click the box to unmute and click OK.

When your are back at Recording tab and moving green bars show in the meter, click on Configure at bottom left of page. This will take you to Speech Recognition Options window.

Thanks, dlsayremn, I got the headphone mic working, but not the built-in. Maybe it's not turned on, but I've looked everywhere for the switch. In the Control Panel, with the headphones unplugged, it says "working", but there are no sound bars.
