Hiya

Found this in the newsgroups:

See if you have a folder (on your largest drive if C is not your only drive)
C:\MSOCache\All Users\<PIDNUMBER>\FILES\PFILES\MSOFFICE\OFFICE11
and the file OFFCLN.EXE
Try running it to see if it will remove prior versions

Or you may need to run the Windows Cleaner to remove prior versions

tried looking for both files, can't locate them. Is there away that I can uninstall the update that did this in the first place and if so do you know which one. The window cleaner, I can't detect which one for office xp.

Okay

Which version of Office are you running, and the version of Windows?

This is for Office 2000:

Hi Will,
I have found my own solution to this problem. It involves downloading the relevant Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=238413. This is primarily for Office2000. I don't know what the equivalent for Office XP is. The problem for me at least was acorruption in the Installer files usually MSI files. This meant i couldn't even re-install Office 2000. I had to remove the installer files first and then re-install Office 2000. Now the Office Update Site completes properly and tells me which updates I need.
Good Luck.

Bill S. graciously emailed me this fix that worked for me.
Joycie

THE "FIX" I just got off the phone with Microsoft to fix these same problems
described above.

They had me first delete all keys called "patches". Regedit procedure
was to make a backup copy of the registry then use Find "Keys" (Values
and Data deselected), "Match whole string only" for "Patches". I
deleted each instance (I think there were three).

I then was able to go into the Office Update site and it would
recognize the need for 5 patches. It downloaded them and installed but
the installation failed. The MS tech said "that was normal because I
already had those patches installed." I reran Office Update and it
said I still needed those five patches.

The MS tech said just ignore those five patches and I would have to
live with it.

I then went into Add/Remove and was able now to remove MS Office
completely.

I reinstalled from the CD successfully and was able to load SP1, SP2
and then the five troublesome patches successfully.
THANK BILL BARRETT FOR THE FIX "THANKS BILL" Bill S.
