My elderly mother lives across the state from me. She has a Compaq Presario w/Windows 98. Her sound quit working "several months ago" (which she told me yesterday--ha!). Over the phone, I stepped her through re-installing the sound card drivers from her Compaq restore cd.

Now she can get midi's, but no wav's. Windows Media player acts like it is playing the .wav sound, but there is no sound.

I led her through volume control settings to be sure nothing is muted, and also into Mulitimedia in Control Panel to be sure her device is selected, and she says it is.

In System/Device Manager her under sound/audio, this is what she says is listed:

    ESS Solo1 DOS Emulation
    PCI Audio Drive
    Game Port

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Carrie

Have her open up the volume control icon, go to options, properties, place a check mark in everything under playback and make sure the wave choice isn't muted and the volume levels are up.

Thank you for your help. I led her through the volume control settings you mentioned (it "only" took about twenty minutes!), and her .wav's are now playing. I hope you realize you made a sweet little 'ol grandma's day!
