Before i get into my problem i just want to say i have been searching around for fixes to this problem on these forums and elsewhere the past few days and have not come across a fix that has worked to any extent.

    Problem:
DVD-RW drive not recognized or usable by Windows or Linux, but I AM able to boot from a dvd/cd and the drive is recognized in the BIOS.
CDGONE, uninstalling IDE channels in Device Manager, manually editing registry, and reconnecting drive did not work.
Drive not shown in Device Manager in any way.
Problem began about a week ago. (Did not notice exactly when, may have been after burning a data DVD or installation of any of several programs)

    Specs:
    Sager np5760 laptop
    Pioneer DVR-k16RS
    Windows XP-SP2
    Ubuntu 7.10

If it weren't for the fact that i was able to boot from multiple different boot CDs and DVDs i would conclude my problem to be solely hardware, but because I am able to use boot disks I am baffled. Any further suggestions or solutions that I haven't tried would be appreciated.

May or may not work for you, but this is safe to use (I do all the time)

Run REGEDIT, open up the following folders:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    SYSTEM
    CurrentControlSet
    Control
    Class
    {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:
    "Upperfilters"
    "Lowerfilters"

Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES.

    Rescan h/w in Device Manager

Tried that already both manually and with CDGONE. No effect.

Remove data cable to DVD (inside case)
    Restart in safe mode
Remove all the cd stuff again in device manager
    Restart
Shutdown and put the cable back in the drive

    Restart

Also check the master / cable select option on drive

I'll try in safe mode when i get a chance, have done it with normal reboots.
It is a Laptop dvd-rw so there is no visible jumpers for master/slave/cable, not sure if there are any inside the metal enclosure but I'm not going to open that because I'm quite positive that is not the problem.

This post was because the normal procedures did not fix my problem, I'm looking for fixes other then the normal ones, because normal fixes have not worked. It is not the cable or the jumpers or something fixed by normal registry editing.

Laptop Hey ! (Sager np5760) Sorry about that.

or installation of any of several things programs Hmm.

One of those virtual drivers, no doubt.

    I'd use Autoruns
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

and go through the list (usually extensive)

Warning: although de-selecting a startup driver in reversable, you can stop other hardware/software from working properly if used incorrectly.

Well i figured out the issue and it had nothing to do with the DVD drive or any software. When i installed Ubuntu 7.10 GRUB likes to mess with optical drives and switching to LILO solved my problem.
If anyone else has a problem seeing an Optical drive and are dual booting Linux and Windows check out this link.
