I have a Dell Dimension E-310, running Windows XP Professional. I just got through adding (again) 2 Gig of new memory, because I thought I had a bad 1Gig set. Not the case apparently. Task Manager says I have about 800 meg, but when I look at the System Information it says I have 2 Gig (correct), and when I total up all the memory used by the 52-56 processes running, it's about the 800 Meg. Got a clue?
Here's my TSG SysInfo dump:
#############################################
Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2

Right-click My Computer, then click Properties.

What's listed in the Computer: section for the amount of RAM?

-------------------------------------------------------

52 - 56 is a lot of running processes for Windows XP.

You must have a lot of programs and services auto-starting.

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

How many entries in the "Startup Item" column are checked?

Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK.

How many entries have their startup type set on Automatic?

System Mfgr. Dell Inc.
System Model Dell DV051 (is a Dell E-310)
The Dell Dimension 3100/E310 desktop has 2 slots and supports a maximum of 2 GB(2048 MB) of RAM.

It supports the use of DDR2 PC2-3200(DDR2-400) or DDR2 PC2-4200(DDR2-533) or DDR2 PC2-5300(DDR2-667) 1.8 volt, unbuffered, non-ECC modules.

You didn't described the modules you installed, and if they're a matching pair, so there may be some incompatibility issue or conflict going on.

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on the sticker?

------------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click it to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log file here.

A Dell service tag number has 7 characters. The one you submitted has 8 characters. Check it again.

Get rid of that outdated AVG 2012.

Get rid of that useless Windows Defender.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE file here.

According to service tag number CH5PQB1, here is the Dell support and downloads site that's specific only to your Dell Dimension 3100/E310 desktop.

You should add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it when needed.

According to its system configuration section, it came with 2 - 512 MB DDR2 PC2-4200(DDR2-533) modules of RAM.

It uses CL=5, 1.8 volt, unbuffered, non-ECC modules.

You installed 2 - 1 GB DDR2 PC2-6400(DDR2-800) modules, but you didn't provide any specs for them, except for the latency.

Some comments and suggestions about your "uninstall_list.txt" log:

Get rid of Ad-Aware 6

Adobe Reader 10.1.5 needs to be updated to 11.0.1
(Click the green "Download latest version" link)

Get rid of Eusing Free Registry Cleaner

Get rid of Fast Duplicate File Finder

Java(TM) 6 Update 27 needs to be updated to 6 Update 38
(Agree to the EULA, then click the "Windows x86 Offline - 16.2 MB" link)

Get rid of LimeWire

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.65.1.1000 needs to be updated to 1.70.0.1100
(Start it, then run its update feature so it can self-update)

Install the free version of SUPERAntiSpyware 5.6.0.1014
(Decline to use the Pro version)

Get rid of Uniblue Registry Booster

Advise us when all of the above has been done.

----------------------------------------------------

You have a lot of outdated and useless programs and extras in that computer.

I suggest you browse through the Add Or Remove Programs list and decide which ones you don't need or use.

If you're unsure about any of them, advise us before you get rid of them.

I really don't know why all 2 GB isn't being recognized.

Make sure the definition files for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware are up-to-date.

Run a quick scan with each one.
(Note: A full/complete scan usually isn't needed and will take much longer to run)

Don't use the computer while each quick scan is running.

When each quick scan is finished, select and remove EVERYTHING that was found.

Restart the computer, if prompted to, so the removal process can finish.

flavllee - I performed all update checks on the two scanning programs before starting. I then performed both program's Quick scans. I restarted my system after each of the scans. Overnight I performed Deep scans on both, Malware had no difference in results, the AntiSpyware scan resulted in 5 NEW files found and removed (again a reboot). No change.
Any new suggestions I might try? This is weird! BIOS check suggestions maybe? I have looked there, but that is like an average grade-school student looking at a Calculus book... overall results is: "Huh?"

Thanks,

That severely-bloated startup load needs to be reduced, so do the following:

-----------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

Save the new log that appears, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.
