All my shortcut icons on the desktop (all but about 6) have changed to the windows default icon - the one that is applied to a file windows doesn't know how to open. Similar story with the program icons. If I click on start and point to programs, they all have this windows default icon next to them. This happened after the pc had been left for a while and the monitor had gone into sleep mode. As I moved the mouse to wake it up, the desktop was blank for a few seconds so I right clicked and selected refresh. It then came up with these icons. I have rebooted but still no joy. The shortcuts and programs still work, they just have this default icon. I am using a dell inspiron 8400, xp sp2 with all updates. No new software recently added and use adaware and spybot regularly.
    Any suggestions gratefully received.

    Registry Edits for Windows XP

Line #4 - Repairs the Icon View.

To use the Regedits: Save the *.reg File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. *.reg files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

    Hope that helps. Good Luck.(y)

I couldn't open the link but got to the site another way. I downloaded 'show desktop shortcut' and ran it but it didn't have any effect. Thanks for the suggestion - it could that I haven't fully understood what I was supposed to do.

Not sure about what you did but I think you were unsuccessful. Anyways, try and see if the following article helps or not.

Icons randomly change to different icons

Hope that does the trick for you. Good Luck.(y)
