Is it a Standard Microsoft two-button or Microsoft Wheel mouse?

Try a regular Microsoft mouse that came with your computer. Some software that runs third-party point devices are not compatible with WinXP and/or you have to get the updated WinXP compatible drivers for the device.

Many devices, especially scanners, do not work with WinXP.

Just to play it safe, go to the website for your mouse, then download and install the latest XP drivers for it.
