 I can't get the mouse to work on this Gateway Windows 98 OS. I have tried a new mouse and dont know what else to do. Could it be a software problem?

    Hi ToolGirl, welcome to TSG.

    Some more info:

Do you get an error message when the computer is booting, something like 'no mouse found?'

Is it a serial mouse or PS/2 mouse?

    Has this mouse ever worked?

Hi! Sorry, I don't know the difference between a serial mouse and a PS/2 mouse. I have the kind that has a cord and you just plug it in to your tower. (A standard mouse, I guess. They cost about $5.00.)

When I turn on the computer it doesn't give an error message. The mouse is 'frozen' in the middle of my screen. We have had problems with it before but we would just clean it and it would work or we'd buy a new one. Now it won't work at all. And this one is fairly new, and it is clean.

    Will it work in safemode?

Does the mouse connect to a round connector on the pc or a small rectangular connector?

Ok, that's a PS/2 mouse, unless you've got it connected to an adapter to make it fit.......

Can you boot windows into safemode? Tap the F 8 repeatedly while starting and choose safemode.....does the mouse work?

No adapter-and what do you mean when starting up, when I turn PC on? if so then I will try, what should I do next? and How can I use the PC's commands without the mouse? I know that ctrl+esc gets me to the start menu but do I need to know any other functions to perform this?

When you power on the computer, when you see the information starting to scroll across your screen (before windows loads) start tapping the F 8 key.....a menu should pop up for you to select safemode from (you don't need your mouse to do this....you'll use your keyboard, choose # 3, I think, check to be sure that's safemode).

Once windows loads, test the mouse.

Click on Start button in lower left corner of screen. Click on Shut Down. Select Restart and click on Okay. Then follow AcaCandy's advice above.

    HTH :)

Hello All-I want to let you know that your advice worked! I went into safemode and fixed the problem! I am using and all is well once again!

FYI-I just got a file that when I opened it it started deleting my other downloaded files so I shut sown manually and deleted the file and notified AOL! If any of you get a file that says'check out this car' or 'Ford 2002'-don't open it!!!
