My HDD shows 21GB+ free yet MS Word will not save and says "Insufficient memory. Not enough disc space". Norton AV and Trend Micro scans detected no virus, Add-Aware and Spybot found nothing either.

Had a quick read about [email protected] or [email protected] on Symantec's site and their fix warns that I may have to re-install Word afterwards.

Is there any way I can confirm this is the problem before I try their removal tool?

I have Word 2002 btw, any help will be appreciated,

    TIA

    Do a Find > Files for NORMAL.DOT

When you find it, delete it and try Word again. The file will be rebuilt.

You WILL need to go into Word options and reset any defaults that you changed, such as file location, default font, etc

    Thanks WhitPhil

It worked, although I had to try a few times ... so far so good. What causes the .dot file to do that? Can anything be done to prevent it from doing so again?

Periodically the Normal.dot file becomes corrupted and causes problems for Word.
It contains, among other things, all of your default settings.

Thanks again for your input WhitPhil, Word is behaving so far and I'm sure glad I didn't have to 'fix' or reinstall.

Say Hi to the big Smoke for me, I'm originally from the Newmarket area.

    Cheers
