    Hi "Techguys",

    I am trying to run msconfig to reduce the startup clutter on my son's laptop but msconfig closes after a second or two, making it unusable. A couple of previous posts on TechGuy indicate this may be due to a viral infection or trojan, which also affects regedit. Sure enough regedit does the same but Task Manager works OK. I am running windows XP (Media centre edition).

    Oh, no, now I can't run HJT!

    I have downloaded HJTSetup.exe but when I just tried to run HJTSetup.exe to install it, this also closes. It happens about a second after I click on "Install" when I can see the licence window, but before I can click Accept.

    What can I do now! Would a screenshot of task manager processes be any help?

    regards
    Andy

    Download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
    1. Close any open browsers.
    2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTScanIt, allow it to run.
    3. Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
    4. In Additional Scans section put a check in BotCheck and Disabled MS Config Items and EventViewer Errors/Warnings
    5. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
    6. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
    7. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
    8. Save that notepad file
    If the log is too large to post, use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

    Start OTScanIt. Copy/Paste the information in the Code box below into the pane where it says Paste fix here and then click the Run Fix button.

    Code:
    [Registry - Non-Microsoft Only]
    < Windows NT\\Load [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\] > -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\load
    NY -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\mqwnouz\services.exe -> %SystemRoot%\system32\mqwnouz\services.exe
    [Files/Folders - Created Within 30 days]
    NY -> 11 C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp files -> C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp
    NY -> 1 C:\WINDOWS\*.tmp files -> C:\WINDOWS\*.tmp
    [Files/Folders - Modified Within 30 days]
    NY -> 334 C:\Documents and Settings\Doug Thomson\Local Settings\Temp\*.tmp files -> C:\Documents and Settings\Doug Thomson\Local Settings\Temp\*.tmp
    [Empty Temp Folders]
    [Start Explorer]
    [Reboot]

    The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix.
    Post that information back here.

    I will review the information when it comes back in.

    Click here to download HJTInstall.exe
    • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    • Click on Install.
    • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

    I don't see any anti-virus software running.
    Look in the TSG Library of Knowledge for suggestions. Some are purchased and some are free. Pick one and get your system protected.

    [IMG] Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

    Upgrading Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
    • Click on Continue.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

    Download the HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager.
    • Unzip HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager
    • Run HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
    • Click on the Make Writable? button.
    • Click on "File Handling".
    • Click on "Restore MS Hosts File".
    • Click OK on the Confirmation box.
    • Click on "Make Read Only?"
    • Click the X to exit the program.
    • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

    Post a new hijackthis log and let me know if you are still having problems.

    Thank you. You've been a great help.

    As you recommend, I have updated the JRE to 7 and reset the Hosts file. I will get security software installed asap.

    Although the malware is no longer running, I still get two pairs of messages at startup, saying it can't find the rogue file C:\Windows\System32\mqwnouz\services.exe.

    I have tracked the cause of these messages to this registry location HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows, where there are two keys, load and run, that contain the filepath above.
    (I used Regedit a lot when I used to teach COM/COM+ programming a while back)

    Should I delete the filepath values or the keys themselves?

    Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\mqwnouz\services.exe
    F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\mqwnouz\services.exe

    Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

    You're welcome!

    You still don't have any anti-virus program running and you really do need that. I hope you will consider putting one on your system.

    • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
    • Double-click OTScanit.exe to run it.
    • Click on the CleanUp button
    • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
    • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to rech the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
    • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
    • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

    It's a good idea to Flush your System Restore after removing malware and create a new restore point.
    Turn off system restore, restart the machine and then turn it back on: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405

    Thank you in advance for your donation to TSG!

    :)
