I have a new harddrive and have reinstalled 2000 and all other programmes with no problems. But I have been trying to install messenger, each time I download it, it finishes downloading and then all I get is a Big Red X on the download line and nothing else, there are no messages to tell me what the error is, so does anyone have any answers. I have tried every day for the last week.

    Thanks :D

Have you tried saving the download instead of clicking "Open"? This allows you to close all unnecessary running programs before installing it. Just make sure that you're Internet connection is active before starting the install.

Sometimes you have to have a net passport before it will download so have a look at this page http://help.msn.com/!data/en_us/data/wcv6.its51/$content$/PP_GetPassprt.htm

Yep. You need to have a NET Passport account with a username and password to sign into MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger.

Just register for hotmail, then you technically have a .NET passport.

Correct. I should have clarified how to obtain a NET Passport account.

Thanks again but I do have a NET passport account, have had for years, I have just finished downloading Win 2000 SP 4, so I will try again. I also contacted MSN tech support and actually received a reply and I followed all the directions but still am getting to the end of the download and just the big RED X and no installation. But like I said I will try again now that I have SP4 and see what happens

    Many thanks

I am thinking maybe the messenger I am trying to download may be for XP and that I may have to find an earlier version, or is that toooo much of a BLONDE idea???

I searched for an earlier version and found one for 2000 at Tucows, I have downloaded and installed it, and have even upgraded to the newest version, and it actually worked first go.

Once again many thanks for all the help.

The most current version of MSN Messenger is 7.0.0604(if you know where to find it) and it works with Windows 98, ME, and XP.

Windows Messenger 5.1 only works with Windows XP.
