I'm experiencing a number of problems with Windows7 and Internet Explorer 8 which seem to have arisen more or less simultaneously. Perhaps I've just caused some of them while trying to fix the others? I haven't actually been able to fix any of them, so I'd be very grateful for some help.

The problems, in the order I became aware of them are:

    1. Internet Explorer freezes when attempting open webpages using Flash. I uninstalled Flash Player and the problem ceased only to return after reinstallation of Flash Player.

    2. I'm unable to download and install some software, specifically Chrome, Firefox and CCleaner. The installers seem to run but then nothing happens.

    3. When I start Internet Explorer I get two error messages: "ButtonMonitor has stopped working" and a second informing me that a program on my computer corrupted my choice of Google as my default search engine.

    4. My first attempt to run System Restore failed. My attempts using earlier restore points were declared successes by Windows but my desktop background had gone black and Windows Media Center wouldn't run. I'm using Norton Internet Security 2010, which I gather could be part of the problem.

I'm stumped, and all advice will be most gratefull received.

    Thanks, Ray Sim

I had Norton on an old XP machine and though my problems weren't quite the same, they always seemed to coalesce at the same time. I would try downloading Microsoft Security Essentials (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/) and uninstall Norton and see if that will change the performance. You might also want to try to do a Windows Update and see if there are any positive results. It is confusing, however, that your intial system restore didn't work.

    Thanks for your help.

Would something like Safe Mode allow me to run without Norton to see if there's a difference? I'm trying to change as few things as I can with each experiment I do.

    Thanks again

Yes, try Safe Mode with Networking if you need to access the Web.

    Thanks for your help Phantom.

I was just about to try Safe Mode when it occurred to me to log on using my wife's account (I'm the administrator). I found Internet Explorer handling Flash as usual, Windows Media Center works and I was able to install Chrome for her account.

I'm more perplexed now than ever. Is this a good sign or a bad one?

It can vary from one account to another. One can be corrupt and the other not.

In Safe Mode Internet Explorer seems to operate normally, as does Windows Media Center.

    Thanks again, Ray

Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

    IMPORTANT: Do not fix anything

If possible, run the program in Normal Mode.

I couldn't get Hijack this to download or to work in normal mode, so this is from Safe mode.

Your ButtonMonitor is related to the Gateway Photo Frame program on your computer. You might need to uninstall the software. If you really need it, try reinstalling it.

Given that your computer seems to behave normally in Safe Mode, it'll be a simple process of elimination until you can narrow down the culprit. A Clean Boot procedure might be appropriate for the task. Read both pages from my link.

I've been unable to launch the system configuration utility. I type "msconfig.exe" in the start/search box and hit "enter" and nothing happens. I'm in normal mode.

Thanks once more for the ongoing assistance Phantom.

    Try this fix: EXEFIX

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the Desktop. Right-click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note that you need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

    Reboot the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I have the file exe_fix_w7.reg on my desktop. When I right-click and select "Merge" I get the following error message: "Cannot import C:\Users\Ray\Desktop\exe_fix_w7.reg Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."

I'm repeating myself I know, but I do appreciate the help Phantom. Is there a next step?

Hi Phantom, I'm afraid last night I may have been rude not to say goodnight, so to speak. I got sidetracked by some household stuff. If it was a breach of etiquette I apologize.

I restarted in Safe Mode right-clicked the .Reg file and clicked on "Merge". I got the same error message as in Normal Mode.
