I was just on Internet Explorer on my HP Pavilion dv6000 running Vista Ultimate 64. All at once multiple windows started popping up faster than I could click them off. I hit control/alt/delete and logged off and am now running AVG 9 scan of the whole computer. Anyone know what happened? Thanks.

Sounds like an Adware infection, you should post a Hijackthis log.

    What are the pop-ups about?

You are running two antivirus programs at the same time, AVG and Symantec. Never run more than one at the time or they will fight each other, create conflicts, slow down your computer and render it more vulnerable. You should uninstall one, preferably Symantec, using the Norton Removal Tool.

It was a shopping site that compared prices of merchandise, and it all at once started opening multiple new windows of the same site faster than I could click them off. I've run AVG9, Malwearbytes, and Spybot S&D, but only S&D found anything, and it was 4 items which were then "repaired." Thanks.

Use the Norton Removal Tool, as requested, to remove all the Symantec/Norton/LiveUpdate stuff. After you run the tool and restart your computer, repeat the process a second time.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install and update SUPERAntiSpyware 4.36.0.1006, then run a "quick scan" with it. When the scan is finished, select and remove everything it found. Restart your computer, if prompted to.

Thanks! I've run the Norton removal tool twice, downloaded Superantispyware, and am running a scan right now.

OK, that's done, and I removed 156 items of Adware. The stuff looked like the same type of cookies that routinely crop up on AVG scans for cookies. Any further advice? Thanks so much for the help so far. I'm working on my husband's laptop on the other side of our home office, so it's been an interesting morning!

I'm not sure which antivirus, Norton or AVG, has the best detection rate. I don't use any of them. However, I know Norton has caused a lot of trouble for members on this forum. It has always been a pain to get rid of and causes a lot of problems when not properly uninstalled. I've seen a few members having trouble removing Norton, even with the Norton Removal Tool.

    Good point,Phantom.
But AVG seems to be going towards the south.
And norton seems to be like....
I dont know how to express...,
But its just rising from its previous location and is soon going to win its rep back again

Do I need to leave the Superantispyware on my laptop, since I already have AVG, or do I need to remove one of them? Thanks for all the help.

Are you using any pop-up blocker? Like the one from Internet Explorer or Chrome?

The best one I have found so far is Ad Muncher. It blocks everything, I mean everything, in an intelligent way.
