I see a cable modem connected directly to the wired port, and a router connected to the wireless card. What's supplying the Internet connection to the wireless router if your modem is directly connected to the computer?

When you switch from USB to ethernet you probably have to at least unplug the modem.

When you have modem to router to PC what does the WAN status of the router show? If it failed to get an IP configuration are there any hints as to why in its log?

When my modem is directly connected to my computer the internet works. Right now i have my modem connected to my computer and my router. the WAN light on my router is blinking.
when i disconnect from my modem and connect to my router signal my network center (vista) says my computer is connected to my router but my router is not connected to my computer!

PS Am from Ottawa too but up North

resetting router "erased" computer NIC card address that modem was "seeing"

Go in to router and "clone" MAC address of computer nick card or try power cycling modem, router, computer...leave modem off for 2-3 minutes or more than 5 minutes if motorola modem.

Let me know if you need further details...brand new to cable/router probs but just did this on friend's system and worked fine

Lets get to a good strating point. Power down everything then power back up the modem and do not connect it to anything. Power up the router and reset to factory specs. Connect router to modem and then make a wired connection from the PC to the router.

    Modem>Router>PC

The do an ipconfig /all and post the results.

I'm confused! That IPCONFIG indicates you have the modem connected directly to the machine using the USB connection!

Disconnect the USB connection, turn OFF the router AND the modem. Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect, turn on the router, wait for two minutes, reboot the attached computer.

By my unofficial count that's now four (4) votes (stated slightly differently) for "Disconnect the USB connection, turn OFF the router AND the modem. Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect, turn on the router, wait for two minutes, reboot the attached computer."

Yes, but we expect that you won't have to! :) If you do have to switch back, remember to power cycle (unplug) the modem when doing so.
