Now, I've tried following some of the instructions in the other top two posts about XP lagging (of course, I didn't remove anything using HijackThis, or manually mess with my registry), but I haven't achieved any results.

All my problems seemed to have started when I applied the newest update to Mozilla Firefox (v5.0). Saw that my Realplayer Video Recorder was incompatible with the new version of Firefox, so I downloaded the latest installation of Realplayer and installed it. Shortly thereafter, videos and firefox were slightly lagging, so I restarted my computer. First problem I hit was that it was taking much longer to start up Windows. Then once in Windows, everything became EXTREMELY Laggy, ie. everything would hang for at least a minute before it started, and whilst running, would periodically freeze up for a while, then continue on it's merry way.

So I did what anyone would do when something goes wrong with an update, I went and uninstalled both realplayer and Firefox. I then downloaded the previously known working version of Firefox, and after a re-boot, installed it once again, but to no avail. So I decided to try to get some expert advice before I give up and reinstall my Windows XP.

I was initially planning on finding a HijackThis forum (hence it showing up on some of my reports), when I found this site listed as a recommended forum from TrendMicro, so I figured that this would be the most knowledgeable place I could go to in order to seek help. [IMG]

Depending on how long you've been using Uniblue Registry Booster and TuneUp Utilities 2011 and whatever other cleaner/booster/optimizer/tuneup programs you have installed, you've probably damaged the Windows operating system and broken some of your programs.

So the best thing to do is to repair my windows using the install disk, or just give up and reinstall? Used registry booster once when i installed it, but I've been using tuneup utilities for a year and a half...

Click Start - Run, then type in %temp% and then click OK.

Click Start - Run, then type in c:\windows\temp and then click OK.

Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

It's all junk and is a good place for "nasties" to hide.

After you're done, restart the computer.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

    Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

    It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

You've got massive over-kill with cleaner/booster/optimizer/tuneup type utilities in that computer.

These 4 definitely need to be uninstalled:

    CCleaner

    Eusing Free Registry Cleaner

    TuneUp Utilities 2011

    Uniblue Registry Booster 2010

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    You've got Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.51.1.1800 (MBAM) installed - which is good. (y)

Get rid of Spybot - Search & Destroy and replace it with SUPERAntiSpyware 4.55.0.1000 (SAS) - which is more user-friendly.

Once that's done, run a quick scan with both MBAM and SAS, after first updating their definition files, then select and remove everything they find.

I had exactly the same problem after upgrading Firefox. I removed it, cleaned the registry and reinstalled Firefox 3.6.18 which I got from filehippo. Solved my problem.I went into Task Manager and checked the performance and networking with the Firefox upgrade. They were right off the scale. Firefox was using almost all my resources even when it wasn't running.I went to Firefox's forum only to find that many many people were having the same problem after the Firefox upgrade. Their admins claimed there wasn't a problem with the upgrade. I had to disagree with the admins so I downgraded my firefox and have had no problems since.

@White Wolf - downgrading Firefox was one of the first things I did, but my system just never recovered back to the way it was before the 5.0 disaster... I even downgraded to the last secure version: 3.6.18, but to no avail.

    @flavallee:
Sorry, I thought that CCleaner was one of the best options available to get errant temp files and clean up the registry? I use TuneUp Utilities mainly for the live optimization of program priority and the turbo mode.

But I'll go ahead and uninstall all of them, and of the remainder, they either came as a package with another program I got, but I never use them, or I tested them once, and just never got around to uninstalling them.

Man, uninstalling Tune-Up Utilities was a little tough... I think it's completely removed now though.

And replaced Spybot with SuperAntiSpyware, although I disabled:
    - Start SAS when Windows starts
    - Turned off real-time protection
    - Turned off Hi-Jack protection

Found no threats with MBAM. SAS is taking a long time to scan (over an hour now), so I'll leave it running and post the results in the morning.

A quick scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware is all you need.

A full/complete scan takes much longer and isn't needed.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

Registry cleaner/booster/optimizer/tuneup type programs do little-to-nothing to improve speed, and in some cases will actually reduce speed.

What they can do is damage the Windows operating system and break some of the programs.

Stay away from them, no matter what they claim they can do.

it was a quick scan, but with the program freezes and slow downs, it took over two hours to complete!

This seems to have been the culprit:

    Security.HiJack[ImageFileExecutionOptions]
    - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\ACRORD32.EXE

Thank you for introducing me to SuperAntiSpyware!! :D

I fixed that, reset, and now almost everything is back to normal, with the exception of Firefox, which now apparently only lags and freezes during start up. I haven't done thorough testing yet, as I've only just woken up, and I've got to go to work, but I'll test everything out further once I come home.

ACRORD32.EXE is associated with Adobe Reader.

Yep, saw that when I looked it up. So far with testing, the only thing lagging is video played in the Firefox browser, but I can work on that myself.

Thanks for all your help, and again, thanks for showing me SAS!

If you want to stop now and mark this thread as "solved", that's your choice, but more work needs to be done.

Sorry, I thought that was it, if there's some way for me to improve my system, I'm game!
