Whenever I click on My Computer it takes several minutes for it to open. I have windows XP home edition and I use a Cable Modem. Any solutions to this? It is by far one of the more annoying things my computer does lately!

One of the other problems I have is my computer takes forever to start up when I turn it on. There doesnt seem to be anything out of the ordinary in the start up under msconfig I even stopped a few things like AOL and Nav from starting on start up.. seems to be taking even longer since doing that. Any suggestions on that would be fantastic too.

Shot in the dark here, but see if Windows Image Acquisition is set to automatic, if so change it to manual.

goto START-->RUN-->type in SERVICES.MSC-->scroll down to Windows Image Acquisition--> right click it, select properties, under general tab select manual startup type, then reboot

I had an issue similar to this after I installed a Lexmark AIO and that's what got me straightened out. My bootup went much faster after this tweak also.

    FenwayPrd:

Install HijackThis 2.0.2, run a scan with it, save the log, then copy-and-paste the log here.

The log will show us what's installed, what's running in the background, and if any "nasties" are present.

Since we don't know what you've unchecked and disabled, and it may be hiding something that we need to see, recheck everything first, restart your computer, then post a log here.

Per your computer specs, is that computer a Dell Dimension 4550 desktop, and is it the 400 MHz model or the 533 MHz model?

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for posting a HijackThis log.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

    Remove the checkmark from:

    Adobe Reader Speed Launch C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=Adobe+Reader+Speed+Launch

    AOL Fast Start C:\Program Files\AOL 9.1\AOL.EXE

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=AOL+Fast+Start

    Digital Line Detect C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=Digital+Line+Detect
(Note: This entry is needed only if a 56K V.92 modem is being used.)

    Disc Detector C:\Program Files\Creative\ShareDLL\CtNotify.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=Disc+Detector

    HPAiODevice(hp psc 700 series) C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\AiO\hp psc 700 series\Bin\hpobrt07.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=HPAiODevice

    QuickTime Task C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=QuickTime+Task

    SunJavaUpdateSched C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=SunJavaUpdateSched

After you're done, click Apply - OK - Do Not Restart.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the Services window to see the list more clearly.

Right-click on and then click Properties:

    AOL Connectivity Service (AOL ACS)

    Apple Mobile Device

    Bonjour Service

Canon Camera Access Library 8 (CCALib8)

    Creative Service for CDROM Access

    IntelinetSecure

    iPod Service

    Java Quick Starter (JavaQuickStarterService)

    Intel(R) NMS (NMSSvc)

    Pml Driver HPZ12

Change the setting from "Automatic" to "Manual" and then click Apply. (Note: You have to do one entry at a time.)

After you're done, close the Services window and then restart your computer.

When the small SCU window appears on the desktop, ignore the message. Place a checkmark in it and then click OK.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

I'm confident that you can get away with just having the McAfee, Comcast, and ctfmon.exe startup entries automatically loading and running. (y)

    mcagent_exe C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\Agent\mcagent.exe

    ddoctorv2 C:\Program Files\Comcast\Desktop Doctor\bin\sprtcmd.exe

    ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

    --------------------------------------------------------------

If you're not using AOL with your Comcast ISP connection, get rid of it.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

We're going to work next on getting the temp/junk files cleaned out. (y)

Ok.. I did the msconfig -- everything worked except disc detector was not there, and when I restarted the computer the disc detector did load -- kind of wierd.

In regards to AOL, I sign on thru the broadband... is there something else I should be doing?

I am all ears for getting rid of any and ALL junk on this computer. I have more files than I ever imagined on this thing. I never knew that many files could exist until I started running scans for virus/trojans/worms... Please Im alllll ears ...

This is the greatest site ever.. I was ready to give up on this computer... you guys have given me hope!

Oh shoot I just noticed your first question whether the Dell 4550 is 400 MHz or 533 MHz - I have no idea! Where would I go to find that out. I tried right clicking on my computer but there is nothing regarding the MHz

Concerning your Dell Dimension 4550: It supports 1024 MB of DDR PC2700 or DDR PC3200 RAM.

If it has 512 MB or less, I highly suggest that you max it out to its fully-supported amount.

It's the most cost-effective and best performance boost that you can give it.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Go into the MY COMPUTER main window, then click Tools - Folder Options - View(tab).

Select "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

Click Apply - OK and ignore the warning message that appears.

    Open these Temp folders:

    C:\WINDOWS\Temp

    C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp

and then delete everything from inside both Temp folders.

Empty the RECYCLE BIN afterwards and then restart your computer.

Ok. I opened both folders. I was able to clear out almost everything but ran into a couple things. The first folder I am unable to delete:

    mcafee_B0lYwvZdaAVxyb5
    mcmsc_MlKA854pY0fEcRW
    mcmsc_NFXSuKAJFBuNnkg
    Perflib_Perfdata_668.dat
    WFV123.tmp

and the second folder I am unable to delete:
    ~DFAA5F.tmp
    fb_1908.Ick

Also, MY COMPUTER still takes several minutes to open to the main window, any ideas how that can be fixed, if at all?

A few files will resist getting deleted on some occasions in those 2 TEMP folders. Just wait until the next day and then try again. As long as you deleted the bulk of them, that's the main thing.

How long has it been since you ran Disk Defragmenter?

I just ran it the other day. But I have done alot since then, might not be a bad idea to see if it needs to run again, and probly run the clean up as well?

I was just totally amazed at the fact that there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 700K files on my computer. UGH. But since I don't just want to arbitrarily delete things, there they sit.
