Running Windows XP and I left the computer on while I had supper with Word up. When I came back, Word had frozen and all the folders and files have disappeared from "My Documents" in Word. Is there any possible way to get them back? All other programs seem to be okay.

Is this computer using "Sleep" or "Hibernation"?

Did you open Windows Explorer (MY Computer) and the look from there ?

That doesn't happen. Computers don't just up and delete files because they're ignored during dinner. They can lock up, blue screen, randomly restart. None of those things delete files. Look closer. Either all of your files are gone or none of them are gone. Computers aren't spoiled children playing favorites.

It did lock up. The "This program is not responding" message came up so I closed Word down and re-opened it. Word came up okay but when I clicked on the file box to open a document I'd been working on, the "My Documents" box is completely empty. I closed down completely and tried again - same result, nothing.

Download to Desktop: DDS by sUBs from one of the below locations

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.exe

double click DDS to run it
Make sure there is a check mark in DDS txt
place a check mark in the attach.txt box and then press start

Do not select any other options unless specifically told to

When complete, DDS.txt will openand attach.txt will be minimized on your taskbar, click on it to open it

Save both reports to your desktop.
    DDS.txt
    Attach.txt

post the contents of both logs back here.

I'm the only one who uses this computer and I'm wondering if perhaps thw Word program itself is corrupted and will have to be re-installed. If that is so, I'm going to lose all those documents.

Have you tried opening Windows Explorer (My Computer), then browse to the following:
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents

Do you see your files there?
