About a year ago I deleted My Network Places. I don't remember how I did it but I would like to get it back. At the time I never thought I would use networking but now I do. Is there a way to repair or load from the XP CD just My Network Places?
You probably used something like TweakUI to hide it. You may also simply not have file/print sharing or Microsoft Client loaded.
Let's see this from the machine.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:
In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:
Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.
IPCONFIG /ALL
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.
If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
If you need stronger medicine, try this to restore Network Places.
Create a file in notepad named FIXNET.REG with the following contents:
You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD.
1)Filename : FIXNET.REG
2)Save as type: all files
3)Encoding: ANSI
If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be FIXNET.REG.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result.

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.
No, should not be a space, that's the forum editor, which adds a space at the 75th position if there are no spaces prior to that.
Is My Network Places missing from the Start Menu, or just the Desktop, or from both?
If it's on the Start Menu but not the Desktop, try this:
For the Desktop, right click the Desktop, click Properties, Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop... button, check the box for My Network Places (If checked, uncheck, close, then go back and check it)
I found the culprit! I went back through my old programs and found "X-Setup" which I must have used to remove the icon originally. Apparently, this setting overrides attempts to replace the icon?
In any event, it's back and working now. Thank you John and Outcaste for your help. You guys always come through for me when I screw up.
