    Ah...
    I knew something was up.

I had just downloaded the latest version of AIM (5.9). After it installed, everything was running majorly slow. I figured it was the program so I uninstalled it and re-downloaded an older version. The lag had stopped but I felt uneasy about it so I ran Norton's. Low and behold it picked up a trojan. I think it said Trojan:Start Page. Something like that.
Anyway, Norton's quarantined it. I then ran a second scan and it came up clean. I just want to make sure it's gone for good.

Should I run my very first Hijack This log?
    Please help

    bump :)
I actually think it might be okay. It doesn't seem to lag anymore
I did two more Norton's scans...doesn't find anything.

    Post a log anyway?

Please go to your Norton log and give me the entire path to the trojan.

Then it would be a good idea to post your log, just in case.

Okay I just checked the log.

    It says:
"The file C:\ie.reg is infected with the Trojan.StartPage virus. This file was quarantined."

I ran a few more scans throughout the night after that and nothing came up. Don't see any unfamiliar programs running in the background. Nothing new in msconfig.

But then again, I'm not very familiar with this type of virus.

What should I do next? :(

Sorry, I assumed that you already had it.

Please do this. Click here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html to download Hijack This.

It’s very important that you save it to its own folder on your hard drive, such as program files (not temporary files or the desktop), so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed.

Arrgh...I saved the zip file in Program Files, but I think the exe somehow went into Temp.
I'll probably have to redo it, huh?

Yes, please move it into a folder of its own on your hard drive.

In the meantime, you can also do the following:

Please download and run the following programs:

    CWSHREDDER

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

Close all browser windows, open cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" and let it run.

    Then restart your computer.

IMPORTANT! To help prevent this from happening again, you should install all the Microsoft security patches and critical updates.

    AD-AWARE

    Go here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
    and download Ad-Aware SE Personal

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the bottom right-hand corner of the main window click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

Then, in the main window: Click Start and under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Then, deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

To start the scan, click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next)

    Restart your computer.

    SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY

    http://majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Open Spybot Search & Destroy (Click Start, Programs, Spybot S&D (Advanced Mode). Click online, Search for updates, Download all available updates. Close all Browser windows, Click ''Check for Problems''. Anything that needs to be fixed it will show in red and have a green check in the box to the left. Click ''Fix Selected Problems'', Then restart your computer.

Then, after rebooting, please post another log and we’ll see what’s left to get rid of.

StartPage is in the database of Trojan Remover and is described as an 'Annoyance Trojan' that changes IE start pages.

You can try TR for 30 days so have a look at the website and see what you think;http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/

Hijack This should be in its own folder. You should also update your version of IE, it is very outdated.

Rescan with Hijack This, close all browser windows except Hijack This, put a check mark beside these entries and click “fix checked”.
