I would like to write a routine which will backup specific tables from a MySQL database and download it to my hard drive. However, if anyone knows of a reliable script that is already in existence, why re-invent the wheel, I'd love to use it:)

Have a look at mysqldumper It only does whole databases but you can cron job it to run automatically and email you the file. Almost what you want.

Lovely suggestion Colin:) I had already found it via Google and SourceForge.net. It says it is web-based does this mean that if I upload it to my server, it could be executed from a link in my php? I would like to do exactly that, but I gather that the process is not that simple:(
Can anyone give me an insight as to how I might achieve this, please?

I have it in it's own sub domain and call it via url. Once a week I have a cron job that runs backs up all my db's. I leave them on the server with just an email to confirm that it has been done. As long as you hosting allows cron jobs it can be set up relatively easily, I managed to do it and am no nix expert. I just used Google and the mysqldumper documentation and support forum.

Well now! My good friend Thruska (BarebonesCMS and a member here) has provided me with an excellent alternative which I shall follow up on...
