My computer became infected by the PSW.X-vir virus and I don't know what else. I found a posting at http://forums.techguy.org/security/499776-problems-psw-x-vir-trojan.html and followed the descriptions there:

I got a bit confused, so i tried posting there, but got no response so I'm trying again here.

I ran HiJackThis first, then ran SmitFraudFix in SafeMode, then HJT again. the log files follow. The laptop is still very slow. I am also worried that somehow my version of McAffee security was compromised. i have tried to uninstall it but it seems to hang on a portion called "undefined", so after 1/2 hour or so i killed the uninstall process.

any suggestions on what to do would be most appreciated.

    Thanks:

I Posted this Monday. It seems most other people have received answers to their issues. can someone please help me to fix this? I realize now that i did two tings instead of the recxommended first step, but it seems that the second step of running SmitFix is pretty standard. i would really like to get my laptop back to normal.

    thanks

    Looks good but do this

    Download Superantispyware

    http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
    · It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
    · Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
    · Click the Scanning Control tab.
    · Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
    o Close browsers before scanning
    o Scan for tracking cookies
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
o Please leave the others unchecked.
o Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
    · On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
    · On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
    · On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
    · Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
    · After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
    · Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
    · It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
    · To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
o After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
o Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
o Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
    · Click close and close again to exit the program.
    · Please paste that information here for me with a new HijackThis log.

I should remark that the machine which was infected is offline -- i have been transferring files back and forth via a flash memory card. One of the questions asked by SAS was if i wanted to update the virus definitions. i guess this won't work too well if the machine is offline.

in any case, SAS found nothing. attached find SAS log and HJT3 log. i am going to go back online and try this again... if i find anything i will post again. thanks for your help

No more warnings. I was able to uninstall McAffee, but I think there is still something wrong. I can only log in if i take the machine offline and even then it takes more than 5 miutes. The machine does not seem to be able to acquire a network address, either via the wireless connection or ethernet cable...this used to take two minutes, i've been trying now for an hour unsuccessfully.

If I cannot connect to the internet (it refuses to acquire a network address), i cannot ask the installed version of SAS to update its files, as it can't get back to its server. Is there another way to get these files to my computer?

I was thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling SAS on my flash drive via the computer which I can connect successfully to the internet. Once the program is installed and updated successfully, can't I run the same executable from the laptop which won't connect?

Maybe there is a better approach?

Restoring the missing resource variables seemed to work wonders for improving the reboot/login speed. SAS was then able to update its files and successfully found several files/regVariables/processes. Included are the results of this log plus another HJT log file.

    did i miss anything?

Your spyware log is clean - mark this solved and then post the connection issue in the XP forum where you'll get a lot more help - state that your log is clean
