Solved: network connection verified, but IE will not display pages

Hi. I am new here and hope someone can help me. I have a desktop running Windows Vista that I have had for 2 years with very minimal problems. I have internet through b2x, ethernet plugs directly into my computer, no router. I have had this service for about 6 weeks with no problems up to last week. I also have Magic JAck phone service. Last week the internet was out due to a server problem with my ISP. When I still could not connect on Tuesday of this week, I called back and was told that all of their problems had been resloved and I should not be having a problem connecting. They looked from their end and said that they can see my connection and it is working fine. I can go into my Network Connections properties & see the connection and see bytes being exchanged, but when I try to open Internet Explorer it tells me that it cannot display the web page. Also my Magic Jack will not connect...it gives me an error that says that there is no network connection, but as I said I can see that there is. When I try to diagnose the prob in IE, it tells me that windows cannot find a problem. I have restored everything that I can find to restore, reset every setting that I can find to reset, I have unplugged and rebooted more times than I can count, and still cannot connect. I did notice that there was a Windows Auto Update that was done last Wednesday (which is when this problem started), but I uninstalled that update and still no luck.

Does anyone have any idea what could be blocking these applications that they are not recognizing the network connection, or am I going to have to take this thing into a shop and have it looked at? I appreciate any and all suggestions very much...thank you for your time!

If no luck,

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

You still have remnants of AVG on your computer. Download and run the AVG Remover to get rid of all traces of AVG. They might be conflicting with Symantec and your browsing capabilities.

If you have tried everything in the link I've provided and nothing worked, I'd say you had a lot of possibilities there. Yes, for now, I would try removing AVG properly.

But, there are other things you can try too:

Refresh your DNS by following these steps:

Click Start > Run > type CMD

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /renew

(one at the time)

Reboot

If no luck,


Check your Services are Started:

  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
  • Workstation
Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.


All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.


If still no joy,

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista.


Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

well I tried it all to no avail, so I did what you do when all else fails....I reinstalled Windows & success!!!! The only downside is I'm still not sure what caused the problem in the first place. Thank you again for your help.

hey no problem...you tried!!! I am going to watch updates very carefully and install them one at a time from this point as I think the problem may have had something to do with a Windows update. If I have any more problems after an update I will definately report back and let you know. I had been meaning to do a backup of pics & docs for a while and had been putting it off...at least this made me do that!! Thanks again for your help!

I would recommend that you keep Windows Updates set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".
