The question that needs to be asked is, what do you want to use this laptop for?

Are you going to use to it for general stuff like listening to music, watching movies, browsing the internet or are you going to use this laptop to do business, for instance you might want to have access to your e-mails or access to more business orientated programs like MS Office.

We can only start making recommendation on how the computer should be setup once we know which type of user will be using this laptop or the uses of the laptop in question.

There are too many free antivirus programs to choose from. What I use is Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes (free versions). I don't surface the internet too much but I am satisfied with this two programs. Others will also tell you to try other antivirus programs, but that is up to you to decide on what to install.

you can start by downloading and installing a web browser, you can choose from Firefox https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ or Google chrome https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/.

As for the games you need to be careful where you download them from, some games come with viruses so I would advise you to download your games from legit sites, I am not a gaming guru so I don't know which sites are legit.

I also put more emphasis on an anti-virus program so I am echoing on @texasbullet's advise, you can download Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus or any other third party AV program like http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html with a combination of Malwarebytes preferably. Please make sure to keep your anti virus programs up to date at all times
