I hope someone can offer me support on this issue as I have been pulling my hair out for some time now. I seem to have lost all audio capability on my HP notebook. The audio icon in my system tray has a red X on it, and hovering over it displays the message "No Audio Output Device is installed". Any ideas for a solution?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I've tried that, but to no avail. Any other suggestions?

When I run the Playing Audio troubleshooter, it shows one problem "Audio device is disabled" as "Not fixed". I have attached the .xml file (renamed as .txt) produced by the troubleshooter. Hope this sheds some light.

I discovered that this problem was caused by insufficient permissions on a key in the Windows registry. I navigated to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\MMDevices\ and then I right-clicked on the MMDevices item, selected Permissions, and granted Full Control to the Everyone group. This solved the issue for me.
